From the comments in that link:
Q: Why do you think Earth needs space?

A: If it wasn't for all the space Earth would be sitting on the Sun. And that would make our curtains fade really fast.

Few years back I heard a former boss from Sheffield Uni on t'wireless.

It was in connection with a voice assistant having a local accent. The accent in question being the mellifluous tones of Barnsley Bard Ian MacMillan.

I think they've cut all the offensive bits out.

Anyway, for those interested, it's on BBC4 between 10.10pm and 10.15pm....

There was a SECRET doc in that stash - you're not supposed to take them on the bus...there are loads of rules about sealed tamperprof containers/tracking/CPNI approved security furniture blahdy blah
(I had to go through the yawnsome vetting/training to potentially deal with OFFICIAL-SENSITIVE stuff. Sadly we pulled out of the project and I had to hand back my Walther PPK and exploding watch)

Allez Nanna, Grandad! -

French authorities have launched an investigation after a fan caused dozens of cyclists to crash during the Tour de France on Saturday.

The disastrous fall was caused by a woman standing on the roadside of the Tour's opening stage.

She stepped in front of the racing pack holding a cardboard sign, appearing to display a message for the television cameras.

According to the race's video coverage, the sign hit German rider Tony Martin who was cycling near the head of the pack. Martin fell, which led to the subsequent crash of dozens of riders behind him.

Cyclists fell en masse and the crash left bikes and bodies tangled in the road. The fall held the race up for several minutes.

It appears to be a mistake by a senior official apparently - there was me thinking someone had intentionally stored them in a 'soggy heap behind a bus stop in Kent'

That story doesn't really appear to say anything beyond "minister waffled". The spirit of muttering in a page.

I thought rather more telling on that story was that they had a BBC journo on board the boat. Someone expected a newsworthy event, perhaps because they were out to provoke it.

I just bought a replacement, middle-of-the-range phone*. It came with 12GB RAM.

12GB !

It also has a 64MP camera. My actual camera is a 12MP device...

Why would anyone need more than 640K (let alone 200000 times more)?

640...
640k?
You only need 64!

I think you know my reference.

FWIW, the first 'puter I programmed on had something under 6k, of which 1k was the screen (40x25 characters, each a byte of the usable RAM). And the first mainframe I used in my first job, we had to 'phone the operators if we had a job that wanted more than 2k core memory (though it was just months before that was replaced by a VAX).

And no one will need one in their home?!

I actually really enjoy working with constraints in this stuff..
Even these days it can pay to be frugal with resources; only about 6 years back I was getting charged 2.50AUD a byte for datagrams over an LEO satellite cluster for a project (no, we can't turn on debug ;) )

It could have been worse. Apparently you can get a twelve month sentence for trying to smuggle chewing gum into the country. (Beyond the two packs allowed for foreign travellers.) Just don't drop it on the steps on your way into court, or they'll stretch the stretch. :?
