That might stack up to a Western audience but out in Asia, esp NE Asia you do not have 'frank exchanges' with peers you wish to maintain working relations with. And never mind in public and on TV!
I don't know the background to the matter Xi alleges, but what he did there was calculating and for his audience back home.

A cruise ship passenger who (presumably) fell overboard was in the water for 32 hours before being rescued alive and relatively unscathed https://news.sky.com/story/thanksgiving ... l-12755703

Hard to believe.

No-one ate him? How lazy are today's sharks? Or was he just too toxic on a diet of cruise food?

You're in the northern regions of this island, yesno? So you'll be getting a faster change than us in the south.

I find things are getting perceptibly better by the time the worst of humbuggery gets put away, around twelfth night. So just another fortnight of full-blown gloom.

And right now, bright (though showery) weather is alleviating it. The weather makes much more difference than the calendar in this season :)

Yes, near Glasgow. London only got a 5 second improvement today. On the other hand, London has a daylength of 9 hours today, we only have 7 hours :(

Often forgotten the mornings continue to rise later well into January. Another 3 minutes later (London) by the 28th, falling back those 3 minutes again only by the 9th or 10th. The sun will be setting another 15-20 minutes later by then, but no-one really notices that much yet.

PS do we need a separate thread for dead celebs/sports stars/musicians etc?

Like a 'With thanks we remember' type title?

Just a thought.

Stunning video of the longest ever wingsuit proximity flight, around Mont Blanc https://twitter.com/GoPro/status/1609553905402134528

(Also stunning how little snow there is at the lower levels.)

According to the one show (yeah, I know), candles in the house are dangerous. Whodathunkit?

'They should cam wiv an 'elf warnin' said all the stupid people interviewed.

The fire brigade and insurers must have rejoiced when open flames (fires for heating, candles etc) were evolved out of households when we embraced gas/electric heating and the lightbulb.

Not so fast.....

Tragically few realise the risks of candles.

In this case the elderly woman was a resident in a grace and favour flat in the palace, and just happened to think how nice it was to use a candle to light her way to bed, every night.

As someone interested in historic buildings and artifacts, one thing that astonishes me is how much has survived and why everything didn't burn to the ground years ago. But in those days people were more careful.

Yes, absolutely. Fire is still fire and people these days seem to forget this as they adorn their houses with scented candles 'because it's nice'. Maybe its just easier to blame someone else for a lack of suitable risk warnings when your kid knocks over a candle in your living room.

I've seen 'replica' candles with LED's that even flicker away and if you must have 'Autumn aromas' or 'festive feelgood scents' then buy a tin of spray.
