Big shiny thing in the sky, over there

No not the sun, that went down hours ago.

It's west of me, low in the sky. I'm guessing Venus unless the second coming is underway in Newbury, or something's gone supernova
Any recs for a good 'sky atlas' /star chart online ?

If you have an Android phone you could download Sky Maps from the Playstore.

Definitely Venus. I noticed it around 5pm yesterday and it was incredibly bright.

I tend to use this on my laptop: https://www.heavens-above.com/skychart2 ... t=0&tz=GMT

Try https://stellarium.org/

Wonderful to play with, zoom in onto galaxiers and clusters, planets etc and you can customise it to where you are so suitable for use anywhere

I noticed it last evening but alas not this evening because we have strong winds and heavy rain. Venus though is quite unmistakable. On such a clear evening it is also worthwhile to take a look on the appropriate ap and see where the space station is because if it happens to be in your bit of the sky you will get a clear view of it in the same conditions.

I have an iPhone

I have SkyView Lite. Probably not the best, even if the free ones, but it does allow me to point the back of the phone at a star or other celestial body (plus Hubble and the Space Station) and see it identified. As long as the built in compass is behaving itself. On a bus it can temporarily get confused, and a phone case with a magnetic catch understandably doesn’t do it any favours, but most of the time it is close enough.

Of course it is easy to check if the moon or sun is visible.

The Wolf Moon was quite impressive, hovering over IKEA
Didn't notice the penumbral eclipse though

It's Venus. Every 8 years Venus returns to the same position in the sky but 2 days earlier. It is now at eastern elongation as the Evening Star as in 2012 , the last time it appeared in this season , when in March 2012 Scotland had temperatures of 24 degrees.

It nicely illuminated my walk to and from the boozer last night (the moon, not IKEA)...

Hmmm. Mildly imaginative name for a boozer.

What about Jodie Kidd’s in Kirdford?

Edit: Formerly Warninglith or along those lines. Sounds similar to Warningcamp near Burpham. Something about them Vikings.
