Stepping Down (Mark 2)

After contributing to the original Stepping Down and apparently being thanked, when I try to log in to it I am told that I am not authorised to read this forum. How very strange. I assume it has now been consigned to the awful forum misnamed Polite Discussions. It may not be the intention but it is a form of censorship, although I have no intention of accessing it anyway.

I've just moved the thread to Polite Discussions and left a shadow link in the Snug for anyone to continue following it if they wish to. I should make it clear that I regret having to do so....

Whilst the original topic and early posts on it suited the 'pubby-atmosphere' of the Snug, recent posts have turned it into a wider discussion much more suited to Polite Discussions. This is certainly not a unique event, and whilst there's always some leeway given for border-line themes developing, I think there comes a point where the movement of a topic to a more appropriate board is the correct thing to do. An alternative approach might be to consider locking threads, but I personally think that in this case that would have not been the correct thing to do, so a move to Polite Discussions seemed much more suitable.

We're clearly not in control of how some threads like that develop, but there's certainly no intention of 'censorship' involved at all. You're quite welcome to continue following the thread and contributing to it on the Polite Discussions board, and the choice not to do so is of course your own..

Thanks IAAG. I assumed that was the case. If it is your judgement that it should now be in Polite Discussions, it is mine that I do not want to go there for all the reasons that we know.

Thanks Dod - I fully understand and appreciate your stance on that, but I did want to give you a wider explanation as to what's gone on as well.

Thanks IAAG. Your action makes perfect sense. Yes, it started off pubby but turned a bit nasty, and I assume it then got nastier?

Like others, I always feel a bit disorientated when Pub discussions move to the shadow world of Polite Discussions. I have no desire to walk through the dark mirror into this alternative version of brutish dog-eat-dog debate, so I won't be signing up, but I always feel a twinge of curiosity just the same.

For a moment or two, I was baffled by the problem of what to do with two thanks notifications that I couldn't now access, but I am glad to see that I can just mark them as read. That'll do for me. Thanks again.
