Prior to this crisis, a walk to Wetherspoons or to the cake section of Morissons was my normal form of exercise.

At present I get the impression that people who live in the country are being sacrificed in order to stress the importance of the regulations to town dwellers.

Like yourself I too live in a different country, through choice. To enable us to venture into the 'real' world, as opposed to a social media type world, we are required to fill out a form containing information as to name, age, address, the catagory of outing we are undertaking, the date and time we left our residence and our signature.
For walking/exercise an allowance of 1km radius from home is allowed and one hour allowance to undertake it. Food shopping is to be carried out at the nearest supermarket to your residence, not necessarily your preferred option.
Once out in the real world there are regular police checks with subsequent fines for those who decide to step outside of the law.
I seriously believe it is measures of this nature that will eventually enable this crisis to be defeated and that is coming from a retired rock & roll lifestyle musician. ;)

I emailed one of our customers in Milan late last week to send him and his colleagues our best wishes and to hope everyone was safe and well. The good news is that they are into the 4th week of lockdown and are all OK.

Apparently there is a shortage of ventilator masks in Italy and he sent me a link to an Italian design company that has re-purposed a snorkelling mask to solve this problem. I've got to say, as ventilator masks go it's a pretty stylish as you would expect from Italian design. It's worth watching the video to see how the transformation is made but it includes making some valves using a 3D printer:

I love innovation like this.

Which is superb if you've got the right kit to hand, but otherwise less technical solutions might be required...

Twice on Radio 4 today, the presenter has been giving out the latest coronavirus statistics and reported it as "X hundred new deaths". It got me wondering what distinguishes a "new" death from any other kind of death.

("New infections" of course makes much more sense, as the "old" ones are still with us.)

(Maybe this should be on Pedants' Place.)

These figures are normally presented as 'Daily new deaths', so as counted in the previous 24hr recording period.

But saying "daily deaths" would impart exactly the same amount of information.

I completely agree - I wasn't sticking up for them giving the information out the way they have..

Today I worked on a construction site. I think the thing that bothered me most was not the body of tradesmen, who to a greater or lesser extent joined in on the >2m dance; it was the house owner and her girlfriend, who clearly were not only ignoring the social distancing w.r.t. themselves, but wandered around ignoring the etiquette that the tradesmen were following. It was rather threatening.

Chris, re your inconsiderate house owner and partner, I've heard of people keeping a mop handy to ward of personal space trespassing - but found this on a quick search for an alternative.

Have a word with them and ask them if they know how far 6 feet is. They might just be rubbish with stuff like that...

Tell them to imagine a close relative lying dead on the ground in front of them, and that should give them an idea of the recommended distance required....

It's tricky because, indirectly, they pay my wages. I decided simply to retire to the garden until they had vacated the premises. C.

If I run out of toilet paper, people will keep at least 2m away from me.

We've had cases of:
- Dogs getting coronavirus (https://www.livescience.com/coronavirus ... ssion.html)
- Cats getting coronavirus (https://www.livescience.com/cat-infecte ... owner.html)
- and now it's been confirmed that Lizards can be infected too (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/p ... 33331.html)

If so, doesn't it argue against C19 patients being put on scarce ventilators?

I'd heard on the news that 50% of ventilated patients in the UK pull through.
