OK - A car battery, fully charged has around 45 ampere hours capacity. So a half-charge will be about 24 ampere hours - or about 3 amps over 8 hours. A modest home charger should accomplish this. But a modern car's alternator is usually capable of supplying 60 amps or more. So about half an hours driving should suffice - and it would be a better idea than leaving it idling on the driveway..

As ever, you need to look behind the raw numbers:

1355 new deaths in France, including 884 fatalities in nursing homes that occurred over a period of several weeks and that were announced only today

Strip out that 884 and the figure is very similar to the previous day.

1,122 today

Is that straight reporting or another hidden statistic? Noting France now has 6,507 dead.

AiY'n'U

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavir ... ry/france/

A hidden statistic. The numbers are true, but apportioned to incorrect days. The 'true'ish figures are
2 April 1355 - 884 = 471.
3 April 1120 - 532 = 588.

This means that there are 1416 deaths missing from the figures for earlier days, so as France has been reporting deaths for 20 days or so, and assuming a similar growth pattern outside and inside hospitals, you can expect about 20 of those to be added to the earlier days, and probabbly a hundred or so to more recent days.

The notes say

2 April 23060 new cases and 1120 new deaths in France

NOTE ON FRANCE DATA:

On April 2, France reported 884 additional deaths that have occurred in nursing homes over the past days and weeks. The French Government did not include these deaths in their official count, as their count only takes into consideration deaths of hospitalized patients. Following international standards of correct inclusion, our statistics will include these deaths, and will add them to the April 2, 2020 count following the attribution criteria of date of report.

If and when the French government determines and communicates the correct distribution of these additional deaths over time, we will adjust the historical data accordingly. A similar issue took place on February 12, when China reported an additional 13,332 new cases in a single day due to a change in how cases were diagnosed and reported in Hubei.

On April 3 the French Government reported 17,827 additional cases and 532 additional deaths from nursing homes that had not been reported previously. On April 2, it had reported 884 additional deaths.

Did I hear that the UK has not been reporting deaths from care homes?

Just speaking to my BIL this evening about this - he is a funeral director. He has handled several deaths recently, not in hospital, where the primary cause on death certificate was Covid-19. These will not be in the official stats at the moment, but he believes they will be added in at some stage, when the reporting process kicks in. So we may see a bump like France's.

Is it not about time that the government/police put together some reasonable rules to ensure that those behaving sensibly are not penalised, eg the rules will not apply to people who are visibly more than 4 metres from anyone outside their household.

There are "things" we can control. There are "things" we can have an influence over. And there are "things" we have no control or influence over at all.

I don't know if this politician made a error of judgement or felt she was above the law and "lockdown" doesn't apply to her. Only she can know this.

I keep reminding myself that the majority are staying at home and observing lockdown requirements. I have control of those positive thoughts. My mother is 79 in June. Dad passed away in 1990. She's concerned about catching coronavirus. Of course she is. We all are. Last week she was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. She's been advised that it's treatable. There are many people like her who, perhaps, just don't need coronavirus just right now.

And that's why I have and will follow the lockdown requirements. Because I have control over that. I have my own thoughts about this politicians "lack of judgement" but they will remain in that void that keeps my ears apart.

I think you'll find the clue to her judgement was in her quote "I didn't follow the advice I gave to others". It isn't as though she was delivering a message issued on behalf of someone else that she possibly didn't wholly agree with. As Chief medical officer to to the Scotish nation, it is she who decides the advice to be given to the country's citizens via the position she holds.
If it looks like a p*ss take and sounds like a p*ss take yada yada.

There's a separate ONS report showing UK deaths from care homes, but it's hidden on their website. From memory, it increased the daily deaths by 20% (but was based on smallish numbers - around 200 - so will likely change over time). France estimate 36% increase in reported deaths when care homes are added in (on much larger numbers) so that's likely to be similar to the UK actual figure.

Apparently the PM has now been admitted to hospital, as a "precautionary step".

Bummer. I really really would be sad to see him go if that's what happens.
