Acts of Kindness

Postby sg31 » March 23rd, 2020, 2:14 pm

I thought a thread showing the good side of people might be a worthwhile idea. There's a lot of bad news about at present let's try and celebrate the good in people.

I'll start. I live in a rural area. The village pub is the heart and soul of the area. We are regular visitors on Saturday night, we don't spend much, just 2 or 3 drinks each. We self isolated last Monday because I was starting with a cold.

The pub closed last Friday and trade has been down since this virus problem started.

Yesterday the landlady and her daughter rang the door bell and stepped well back. I made sure no one was close to the door and opened it. They'd brought us 2 pints of our favourite draught beer in bottles. We passed a few words and I thanked them, closed the door and burst into tears.

A small kindness that meant so much.

( we took normal precautions in sterilising out hands and the bottles)

one of my lcoals closed in advance of the PMs declaration on Friday - the owner didnt want to maybe inadvertantly cause any illness top pass on his premises cos he'd stayed open etc.

All the staff are laid off etc.

The manager of the pub (not the owner) ndepsite worries to his own house and future has rather than running off to find another job, has instead singlehandedly been home delivering what he can - 2 pint containers from the pumps, bottles and cans. Its nt as altruistic as sg31#sd landlords, but he is doing his best to help the pub maximise its opportunities while minimising risk to all - card payments, beer left on doorsteps, everything wiped down.

He will probably still end up out fo a job somewhere down the line. But he has carried on the best he can nonetheless.

He's not aone either - another of my lcoals is doing the same.

Local 8-till-late that supports local begetable growsers a farm shop normally is doing deleiveries for the vulnerable and over 70s. Im sure they are not alone - local butcher's ( x 2 in our twon) are also doing home delivery similar to those pubs I mentioned.

Our village has orgainsed via the parish coucil a respnse group to support those in isolation etc.

OPnwards and upwards.

Thanks for your post. It's wonderful. I hope you don't mind but I've sent a copy of the relevant section to our landlord and his wife to see if it gives then any ideas.

The final part I will raise at the parish council meeting on Wednesday. physical meetings are suspended but we hope to meet online.

I'm finding that local businesses that started new takeaway and/or delivery services last week are finding they can't maintain them without putting their staff or customers at risk.

A typical comment is "Hello to all our loyal followers, Customers and colleagues.

It is with a heavy heart we have decided to close down all operations including our popular takeaway and delivery service, this is purely to protect our staff and customers alike in the fight against this dreaded virus.

We are already plotting our grand re-opening...
".

Scott.

yes - Im seeing that today from several places. And of course MacDonalds have closed as well etc.

One of our village pubs/restaurants is doing village home deliveries of meals, but that like the beer deliveries maintains minimal expsoure.

Last Thursday, staying in a small rural hotel in Morocco just after restaurants and hotels had been closed.
There is a knock on the door and opening it reveals a young Moroccan man who thrusts a bundle into my hands. "I"ve brought you some bread in case you need it."
Subsequently arranged that I would accompany him into town to buy more food. Dreadful driver but certainly considerate.

The UK Government have just announced that they were hoping that 250,000 helpers could be mustered to aid the NHS during this pandemic, and they've said that 405,000 volunteers have signed up in 24hrs -

The overwhelming response has prompted the NHS to extend its target to recruit 750,000 volunteers in total. Those volunteers who have already signed up will start next week.

It's great to see the UK come together during these testing times.

Cheers,

Slightly less serious, but I recall people saying that at the London Olympics. A lot of us thought is was going to be rubbish (me included) after the eye wateringly expensive Beijing sports day, but the Games volunteers made the whole thing totally epic on a UK post financial crash austerity budget.

The British can do anything.

Totally agree.

I still think that the opening ceremony was one of the best things I've ever seen on UK television.

I agree, and the "friendly games" atmosphere ran through everything. I well remember it was then that people became quite polite on the tube, immediately offering me their seat if it was crowded.

Or maybe.... it just coincided with me looking suddenly old and doddery.

Not, I think people really did become more considerate - and many of them were foreigners.

Well I agree with the huge response from volunteers in the last 24 hours and at the Olymoics in London but for goodness' sake why bring up the London Olympics opening ceremony which that leftie Danny Boyle designed? It was simply awful I thought.
