Grand National 2020 is on
Virtually!!!
Now I don't remember where I saw this or indeed if its true(I think it is) but that would be fun particularly as we could add any horse into the equation including this year favs and some old timers...
And coming to the second last on his own by 4, its Garrison Savanah closely followed by Tiger Rag and Golden Miller, neck and neck, under pressure and just behind them the courageous L'Escargot who has once again run a tremendous race....2 lengths further back is Desert Orchid and Kauto Star on the outside. Oh what a race this is turning out to be, 5 in line and only 1 length further back is Arkle, Golden Miller, Denman, Mill House and Dawn Run. Making very strong headway in about 12th place is Pendil followed closely by Night Nurse.............. And I just don't believe this is happening again, he looked out of it a few fences back after throwing his jockey into the nearest bar, but back he comes looking fresher than ever............
Coming to the the last never ending 100 yards, I have never seen anything like this in all my life of commentating, they are all together, nothing to separate them, but its Rummie, our Red Rum the people's favourite, doing it again, jockey even had the time to give him some fosters and wins it by a nose........
(Sir)Peter O'Sullevan.(had to come back for this one)
ah, just found it.....https://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/more-sp ... r-BB11NGGR

Anibale fly. e.w.
Bit confusing as first it will only be the 40 runners who were going to run, or with some oldies thrown in or not?

Re: Grand National 2020 is on
Grand National?
Did someone say Grand National?
FOr me there can be only one winner of the virtual race of previous champions and that is Crisp.
Yes, Red Rum was the grewatest ever horse to compete winnning the race 3 times and runner up twice.
However Red rums victory in 1973 is the key to this race.
If Rummy was the greatest horse, then Crisp gave the greatest ever performance in 1973 when he was runner up to Red Rum carrying 12 stone. 12 stone! Think about it. He was giving 24 lbs to Red rum and still nearly beat him. Also the two of them broke the course record (that had been standing for over 30 years) by 19 seconds. Even as the years have flown by the record has only been topped a couple of times by horses carrying far less weight on good going over a much tamed course.
So for me, if the competition is judged on the best individual form of all the previous champions, the finishing order is as follows
1. CRISP (nap)
2. RED RUM
3. HEDGEHUNTER
4. TIGER ROLL
You see the Garnd National is not just about speed. It is about jumping and stanima and courage and Crisp had all three in abundance.
It is worth watching the whole of the race to see just how good Crisp was- look at the way he stands back at the fences- and remember he has 12 stone on his back too.
What a performance.
What a horse.

Re: Grand National 2020 is on
. . . and the leaders are over the last. Carberry is pulling Harchibald to the outside of Crisp - he is laughing at his opponents - on a tight rein when will Carberry let go? 100 yards to go and Harchibald is cantering - Crisp is keeping on but Harchibald is about to pounce - unbelievable Harchibald is stopping like a punctured tyre and Crisp holds on tenaciously with Mill Reef finishing fast under Lewis to grab second on the line - what's this Harchibald has stopped and is having a Hamlet?
Apologies to all aficionados (I do know that H was a 2 mile hurdler and MR was a flat horse)- but I agree Crisp will win.

What's Mill Reef doing there?
Its like racing Mo Farah against Eusein Bolt over the marathon.

Re: Grand National 2020 is on
Mr Frisk. e.w for me on fast going though only. Hoping to see how this format develops. Perhaps 2 races. Champions over the ages and what would have run on Saturday.
Beerpig, that Crisp race brought back memories, had my heart racing. I do recall he was all the rage at the time and I think the favourite on the day. However, those were the days when big boys took the big fences, they were huge as opposed to the hurdle like sticks they tackle today and I don't think virtually, this would be taken into consideration. The greats from the past would demolish this lot, but Tiger Rag is special.
Then there is the going, weights, etc, etc. Can't wait. Hope they announce the starters soon. I believe its on around 5pm ITV but leave some time well before that.

Just saw the 2019 race and remembered last year to make a note for 2020 of Pleasant Company. Depends on the virtual weights but sure was finishing fast.

Re: Grand National 2020 is on
The virtual Grand National goes ahead at 5 pm on Saturday, the time the normal race should have been.
The history of the computer program suggests the cream comes to the top and there are no Foinavons any more.
The going is steady and the horses are assumed to be fot.
There may be a sprinkling of indiscriminate fallers and unlucky-brought-downs, but for me, the best each way shot is Definitely Red.
Tiger Roll is a very worthy favourite, and the Irish duo of Mullins and Elliot will have supporters of their other horses including Pleasant company which (as observed in the thread earlier) was going very well when he came down near the end last year. He was also second the year beofre.
However the form of Definitely Red is rock solid - here, take a look...
https://www.racingpost.com/profile/hors ... y-red/form
now after he won on 29 February the trainer, Brain Ellison, was very bullish
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/ ... acing-tips
I'll row in with the trainer and back him to indeed spoil the Tiger Roll party.
Anyone know where I can get an internet bet on?
I havent seen any markets yet although I believe there wil lbe some?

Re: Grand National 2020 is on
Well virtual race 1 of horses from the past is over. Commentary on YouTube etc. Main commentator is Tommo (stop groaning at the back).
Well Beerpig (and I) hit the target - Crisp won the simulation.
As regards to the big actual simulation to be shown Saturday - unlikely that any bookmaker will provide a sensible book and clearly will not be willing to take more than sixpence ew.

Re: Grand National 2020 is on
And BTW - there was a school of thought that Crisp should have won - look as RP hits the horse with some force about 250m out - just before the bend - and Crisp staggers to the left away from the whip. He had to be rebalanced and lost a little momentum - just enough in my opinion to have made a difference to the result. Of course both jocks would have been led to the Tower if they 'encouraged' their horses in a similar manner today.

There is now a virtual market.
Definitely Red is 14/1
I'll be having some of that.
Good luck all.

Re: Grand National 2020 is on
We will have to wait to see if there is any virtual rain in the next 2 days that could affect the virtual going.

ps Sorry Beerpig - Definitely Red cannot win - any computer simulation will show the nag not staying - its never won beyond 3m1f plus it's too old.

Spoilsport! Definitely my favourite.
Just in case the racing fraternity are unaware, Foinavon and Arkle are two neighbouring peaks up in NW Scotland - on or near the Duke of Westminster's estates. Arkle was owned by the Duchess of Westminster - hence the name. Similarly for Foinavon, whom she part-owned at one time, but since he appeared to be significantly less promising, he was sold on to new owners in 1965. And then in 1967 - at 100 to 1 odds - he won the Grand National.
What flaw is there in the computer software that decides that it can't happen again?
