Also am I right thinking that the app only works if the phone is switched on? Mostly, I have mine switched off and only on when I want to make a call or text or use an app. The only time it's on regardless is when I'm in the supermarket for my shopping list and in case Mrs Bnc wants to contact me.

If OFF means "powered off" : YES that won't work
It OFF means "screen off but phone running": that will work
- it will "work" better in that regard when they abandon the centralised data grab and take the path suggested by Google and Apple

Other: I don't use a mobile 'phone very often (the odd WhatsApp), the rest of the time the devilish device is turned off.

In which case I think you will not get the benefit of installing the app. You will not find out if you have been near an infected person.

You may have noticed your computer doesn't work either, when you have it turned off. :D

There's a broader application to this app than has been advertised.

Even if your phone is off, or corded and on your kitchen wall, if someone e.g. in your pub quiz team gets the nod that they were exposed somewhere during the sports round; they should tell you if you were with them and you can get tested should you choose (or stay alert WhateverTF that means).
I can't imagine most people will be congregating in large indoor groups with strangers until this is well under control; but we might well be with close friends or family in such circumstances, it only takes one of them to be notified for the info to be pertinent to everyone. (Obviously if you're an ostrich this doesn't apply)

It's an new class of edge in the transmission map model.

It needs to be sold to people as a means of protection for themselves and others. And an enabler to allowing us to return to normal activities with a degree of confidence that it's safe to do so. But I am concerned about the security and aspects and that the take up will be sufficient to make it useful.

Where does Blackberry fit into all this? I heard the new app will still run on my 1997 Blackberry even if I turn it off and take the battery out, is that right?
And what about my my other phone, that's on Orange, I think... Alan Sugar sold it to me when he had the Amstrad shop in Weybridge.

No, Orange phones only work on the 'Rabbit' system, which is based on FORTRAN-77, and only runs off 110V AC

Never mind 110Vac, I think I still have one of my oldest phones in the drawer, that runs on lighter fuel....

having google "app meaning " i get ---

App is short for "application," which is the same thing as a software program. While an app may refer to a program for any hardware platform, it is most often used to describe programs for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

It's specifically a thin-client object oriented threaded process running within an Android/iOS meta-kernel, supporting Java nodules written in C# with strong typing and inheritance and local variables for local people

Or I could be making it up...

I'm sure I had something that ran on calcium carbide and water, but I'm a bit vague as to whether the common people were allowed phones in those days.

If my counting is correct we have 19 Yes votes and 22 No votes. Call that 46% for adoption.

If 46% of the UK population use this app and 54% do not, what will be the percentage usefulness of it overall?

It appears that the app that's being trialled isn't really working well and is being put on the back burner. So we will be relying on the old-fashioned contact tracers who ask you where you've been etc.....

Thanks to all those who have voted. The result surprised me, as I'd expected a clear majority in favour.

My own view is that as the Government can see the number of cases and deaths continuing to decline, despite the release from / increasing breaches of lockdown they will finally accept that they have grossly over-estimated the danger of CV for most people, and realise that for the reasons articulated on this board people will either not download it at all or download it and then simply ignore inconvenient notifications.

And the net outcome will be that it will be quietly kicked into the long grass and discreetly buried.

This app has actually been a big concern at my workplace, almost bigger than the virus itself. Mobiles aren't allowed past the front gate so they get left in a huge bank of phone lockers at reception. The problem comes when you've got 500+ phones in close proximity for most of the day then one of the owners presses the 'i've got it' button and the entire organisation is self isolating for 14 days while not allowed to work from home. Almost like a digital spanner in the production line ready to be abused by the malicious or idle
