RIP Olivia de Havilland died at 104. One hell of an innings and very few knew that her sister was Joan Fontaine and I think they have the only distinction of both sisters in the same family having won Oscars.

The news reports have been saying "one of the last", which of course begs the question who's left? You say the last, which answers that, but throws up the question of why they and you appear to disagree!

Is there a generally-accepted definition of this fabled Hollywood era of which she was part?

Wikipedia has a list of 463 still living actors from the "Golden Age of Hollywood" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of ... _Hollywood

Whether any of them are "icons" is of course subjective.

Scott.

So Clint Eastwood is 90. I suspect he might qualify as an icon.

Isn't having the status of "icon" subjective?

I expect, to some, Tom Cruise is an icon, although probably not to most on here.

To my mind, the "Hollywood Greats" starred in black and white pictures, some in silent movies.

Really they are the ones that you remember from your youth. James Stewart, Stewart Granger, Gregory Peck, Katherine Hepburn, Gina Lollobrigida, Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day, and then there are the stars of "B"-pictures, now long gone. Sandra Dorne and Paul Carpenter seemed to be ubiquitous.

Our perspectives are all different.

I'd add Robert Mitchum to your list.

Last one left whom I vaguely remember in a Hitchcock film........but does he qualify for Hollywood legend as in Oscars, awards, etc.?

As someone said, our perspectives all differ.

This thread needs this homage by Jon and Vangelis.

It includes a role call of some of the greats, including Cagney and Bogart.

Doesn't the term refer to those tied to the studios by the 7-year contract system?

Crikey, I never realised he was that awful Headmaster in the Dead Poets Society. Brilliant actor!
