When fences were there to be jumped, when the Chair was effing enormous, when jockeys were tough as teak - Stan Mellor was the champion.

I agree.
He was a fabulous jockey who reached the top of his profession in the days when fences really were fences.
I have tremendous admiration for all jump jockeys past and present- but particularly for those at the bottom end of the food chain- who ride crazy horses for £50-80 a time knowing that at any given moment they could be unshipped, break and leg or worse and be finished.
This is why I admire and respect Tony McCoy for his incredible achievements.
Champion jockey for 20 consecutive years falls, injuries and all.
I met him at a 'do' about four years ago.
He came across to me as an understated and quite shy bloke-he did a sort of interivew with Luke Harvey asking him questions- it was well rehearesed but very interesting and in places very amusing.
Luke: ' Tell me Tony, how did you manage to win BBV Sports Personality of the year?'
Tony: 'I guess because everyone else was sh**'

Anyhow Stan Mellor -fab jockey.
Ride on my man.
