It started with a tale about car insurance finishing at midnight Saturday and the guy getting nicked at 00:05 Saturday morning. Seems indeed the day starts at midnight. The previous day finishes at 23:59.

In typical Pistonheads fashion the debate degenerates but a good read nevertheless.

I suppose that would have to be the case or we would be getting a year and a day of insurance, for each annual premium.

Well yes, but for an insurance company to state that a policy finishes at midnight (of any day) is simply stupid, for the reasons already discussed in this thread.

Agreed. Nonetheless I'm reasonably sure they do - or have done on all my car insurance policies over the years. I can't believe they haven't been challenged on it and found to be correct in doing so.

I just checked and mine says it's From 00:00 27/09/2019, which is pretty clear i.e. I'm covered for the whole day of 27th September. If it had said "midnight" with any date, I would have been so certain.

Every day has two midnights, or no midnights, depending on how you look at it.

Does that mean that two consecutive days could have four midnights in total? :-)

I'd swear when we did a fence project here recently about half the poles were unused. :-o Now I know why ...

I went to my third consecutive Glastonbury and had only been attending the festival for two years. How did that happen?!

No, there isn't.

Can you point to something that backs up your assertion? Your reference to Wikipedia for the meridian doesn't.

Scott.

I suggest you read it carefully and then consider the meaning of the term 'post meridian' (or 'anti meridian' if you wish to convince yourself of the opposite).

OMG Google it for goodness sake. The first definition of post meridian is ": occurring after noon : of or relating to the afternoon the postmeridian hours of the day."

What could be clearer than that?

I think Scott was referring to the assertion, not what post-meridian means.

Playing devil's advocate...the wikipedia link says post meridian is after noon. So by this logic 12pm must be midnight then because it is after noon?

I woke up this morning, and for some reason this thread popped into my head. Then it occurred to me that 12.00 at lunchtime (I'm fairly sure most people will know which 12.00 I refer to), is actually a.m., as the sun passes over the meridian at 1.00 at lunchtime because we are currently on B.S.T. I thought this was very funny, but possibly more Pedants' Corner than DAK.

My daughter and I call them 12.00 m and 12.00 n.m. (for meridian and not meridian). Or we just stick with noon and midnight.

Is the problem not coming from the very static definitional point of view some appear to be taking. Surely it's simpler than all this?

12pm IS midday - The middle of the day; the clock is moving towards the afternoon/evening/close of the day/sunset
12am IS midnight - The middle of the night; the clock is moving towards the early hours/morning/start of the day/sunrise

If you paint half your wall black and the other half white, what colour is the dividing line?

Grey.

(Because that's the colour of the pencil I used to draw the line :-) )
