?? Energy prices rose, presumably because the market is not expecting further lockdowns.

Its the use of "helped highlight" that makes it easy to misread at first glance. Somebody one assumes has to write this stuff.

I think it’s the “easing fears” which makes it a bit difficult to comprehend. I did a double take at it. It’s the fear of further lockdown that is easing, not that rising energy prices are easing fears.

Translation: the energy secretary at the time was making genuine efforts to move us to cleaner energy. But back then it was a LibDem in that position, so obviously the whole project was unmitigated evil and had to be undermined.

The comment is debateable and therefore should be written as a question .

"Meanwhile, a sharp rise in energy prices helped to highlight that the fears of a second bout of Covid lockdowns are easing."

... as lockdowns imply reduced output, therefore less demand for energy.

By how much do you suppose that is offset by the extra energy consumed by so many people WFH? I should have thought that by now a lot of production would have resumed but maybe that is wishful thinking.

I must check what has happened to energy prices today now that we have so many more cases of Covid.

Surely it could be better written as (something like): "Lower expectations of a further lockdown have lead to rising energy prices."

It reminds me of the good old days, when I was employed in the financial services industry. Every so often, the latest "flavour of the month" idea would cascade down the chain from above. For example, the Area Manager would return from a visit to HO, and wander around the branch, asking staff if they knew "what good looks like", or telling staff to think smart and work smart.
