2020 has been...difficult
2021 can't be any worse, surely?
Best not tempt fate though ;)

As someone said on Twitter, let's hope 2021 is the exact opposite of 2020 - utter crap until about mid March, then loads of fun after that.

Scott.

I always hate Q1 anyway - crap weather and nothing happening. I may just hibernate until Easter (but sadly my boss expects me to be online)
I'm going to be back working again on Tuesday, but it doesn't feel like I've had a 'holiday' as I've been stuck on my own due to Berks being Tier 4.
Normally about this time on New Years Eve I'd be out with my friends back home doing a pub tour before settling in our home base (one of two pubs- it alternates) for some proper drinking, and general talking of nonsense

I guess nobody can do that this year, bar the Isles of Scilly, so I'm not really missing out

Berks have much to answer for.

Plenty round here too, and probably partly why London and Kent are in Tier 4 anyway.

Still, today I went back to the place and where I had seen a Kingfisher on Tuesday in the fairly forlorn hope of another view, or at least something interesting on the way, and there it was again!

Even better, it dived into the water, though I couldn’t see if it caught anything as it didn’t return to the perch.

So for that moment, the end of 2020 for me was on a high note.

Oh yes I can, it's my normal mode of operation, every day.

Happy New Year (wait for it...... it's a couple of hours away yet)

I walked along the Thames a lot when I lived in Slough (ahem...North Eton) and I only managed to see a kingfisher once. Well, probably a kingfisher - a bobbing flight and a flash of iridescent blue

Round these parts (West Berks) we are knee-deep in red kites. Not literally

Yes, hold on , we may not get there - haven't you heard about the asteroid strike/murder hornets/re-election of Trump on a technicality?

Prediction #1: a flurry of posts here in about four minutes.

Happy new year.

[edit] No new posts visible, but two thumbs-up already - thankyou! Does that count?

Noooooo ... it's not a "flurry" of posts. It's a "breakout".

Happy New Year back at you kind sir

Brilliant.

Ain't it great. Brexit done. Nicola transferred to Yorkshire. Uncle E going on a pub crawl in January. AiY's charisma bypass going well. Dod test flying the Boeing Max. DSPP flying it. kiloran asking impossible questions. Gengulphus answering them.

Lets' roll

Happy New Year to you all. Still got over 3 hours to go here in the States. Anyway, I’m cooking lamb, roast pots, peas, red cabbage, sprouts, gravy, on second bottle of Veuve, walking in drunken circles and just heard POTUS shout to people, “don’t talk to me that way” I’m the President!” Better half came in and I shouted don’t talk to me that way I’m the drunken President, mind you, she’s trying to grope me, I have an apron on with nothing else and exposes my [expletive deleted]!!! Trouble is as she can’t see too well these days her aim isn’t correct all the time. She grabbed my 12 inch wooden stirring spoon and said OMG, I felt very proud for albeit all of one second!! :D
Having a grand time. Wishing everyone the very best. Now back to check on my roast potatoes.
Xxxx.

Happy New Year to one and all from north central Scotland. It is a quiet morning not particularly cold. Last evening as I was dropping off to sleep at 11 pm I heard a most loud bang and assume it was someone celebrating finally leaving the transition period behind.

So far 2021 has been a great improvement on what has gone before.

You're sure that was only the second bottle of Veuve? Sounds like a fine way to start the evening, though!

Serious overnight hoar frost here in West Wiltshire. Minus six this morning, and I realised too late that I hadn't turned the central heating up before we went to bed. Damn, so now we're drawing straws to decide which of us is going out to feed the birds?

The last new year that we weren't in the European Community was in 1972. I was studying in Berlin at the time, and it was minus 20C in a Siberian wind, and it stayed that way for two weeks just to make its point. I couldn't afford coal for my stove, because my British bank was having difficulty with transferring my student grant into my German account, and as a non-EC citizen I had no rights to any kind of assistance. Cold, skint and hungry! :( Fortunately my Polish neighbours stepped in to help with a rather coarse feather duvet and a large tub of salted goose fat. I wasn't sure whether to eat the fat or smear it on myself like a cross-channel swimmer?

I opted for the former, and somehow lived to tell the tale. On new year's day we went out through Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin, not because we particularly wanted to get frozen to death in the deserted streets, but because you could get a good meal there for about 50p, and a nice warm matinee seat in the Brecht theatre for 15p. Even the Russian soldiers standing outside in the street looked fed up with it, and they'd presumably had plenty of practice. I could see why a spy would want to be in from the cold! ;)

A great start to 2021..... a fine view from our house of the snow-covered hills around Loch Lomond this morning. Another 364 days like this and I'll be happy.
