I have noticed this year a move from Co-vid with a long "o" to "covvid" with a short "o", just makes it quicker and easier to say I suppose.

In Scotland, I have never noticed Covid with a long ''o'' at any time. Must be the influence of our Nicola. Anything England does, we do differently.

Eh? Nicola Sturgeon pronounces covid with a long 'o'.

Can I just check..
this would be the difference between:
C- oh- VID
and
C- aw -VID
?

Cos we've only ever used the former here in the antipodes.. perhaps the new Kent variant is pronounced different (not surprising given my experience of Kent) ?

If it's about brevity can everyone get to grips with glottal stopping and we'll just all call it C-ugh-VI' (with added "the plamff" fer emfassis)

Yes that's my take on it.

Covid as in cove is a long 'o'.
Covid as in bother is a short 'o'.

Not really hearing C-aw-vid would that be the same as c-or-vid?

Yes, to Scott's examples and exactly what I hear.

More aw as in naw
- as in "naw it's not corvid.. yon's a craw"

English speakers forever being divided under a common language
- even in their choice of phonetics ;)

I was in Cardiff, an Australian tourist was asking for directions to Loobaroo. Stumped me. Oh, you mean Loughborough.

You'll have heard the story about the American exposing how they'd fixed that aspect of English
- and the tourist pointing out Kansas and Arkansas

Our satnav once directed us to head for Follkey-Stone. Mind you, it was also the one that had advised us to take the third roundabout exit toward Double Yew Wick. (The map service provider having evidently read the abbreviated lane marking on the road rather than the signpost.)

The cricketer Alec Stewart once told me of a gag that Phil Tufnell had tried on his team. He'd discovered a fantastic new bistro, he said, and they should all meet up, after training, at Al Baroni. Some of them were already directing their taxi drivers by the time the penny dropped.

Someone once told me of a school trip many years ago to,I think it was, Cirencester .
When they got there, people sat in the minibus, perhaps eating their sandwiches, and the conversation turned to how you pronounce the town name.
Was it “Sisster” or “Syrensester” or what ?
To settle this, someone got out and asked a man who looked like a local, saying “excuse me, what do you call this place ?”
The reply, after a short hesitation and a puzzled look was “This be the Municipal Car Park.......”
