Memories of Hot Cross Buns

Do you remember the “Real” hot cross buns of old?
Only available immediately before Easter not almost all the year.
Had a texture that was much firmer than the soft pappy things now.
Smelt and tasted rich and wonderful, lots of preserved fruit, spices etc.
Had a proper pastry or cut cross on the top, not a sloppily dribbled apology.
As lads we enjoyed going to the bakers to queue in the glorious smell to collect them for the family.

Should they be allowed to call the modern things hot cross buns?

People like to think things used to be better when in fact they were not. Sure, if you are stupid enough to buy a pack of 500 Hot Cross Buns for £0.20 then you have only got yourself to blame, but there are plenty of good quality Hot Cross buns about from any decent baker, and I bet the hygiene is better

Our local posh bakers ("artisan" they say) make proper ones, but £1 per bun is quite a bit more than Tesco charge.

My shameful secret is that I actually quite like Tesco Extra fruity HCBs, even though (or because) they are soft and squidgy and not made the "proper"way. I must get some more tomorrow. If course they need lots of butter, and the merest scraping of jam.

After I should buy the posh custard tarts from the baker. These are a phenomenal £2 per small tart, but they are better than I thought possible, and we've eaten loads after avoiding them for ages because of the price.

My missus this morning could not resist a pack of extra posh super special lime and chocolate enrobed luxury biscuits, sorry "melts" from the local Isawucoming organic emporium, complete with fancy writing, picture of pixies skipping across sun-drenched meadows etc on the packet: 10 biscuits for £3.79.

Had one with my coffee this morning. They had the unmistakable whiff of lemon & lime toilet cleaner about them

Jam? Heresy. Having just had a couple of the Tesco Finest extra fruity variety, they are worth eating. Even 3 cups of tea cannot dispel the lingering taste of the spices.

Most definitely not!

Call them Cross Buns if you like, or Cold Cross Buns. According to my father (who used to work in a bakery in Woodbridge long before I was born), they were always sold hot. The cross was just cut with a knife. What they tasted like, I don't know, but there is nothing hot about the ones in plastic at the supermarket.
