Yes, similarly I always ponder the situation when people insist that people with disabilities etc can only be played by actors with that disability. Aren't they painting themselves into a corner where they can only play people with the exact same disability (or whatever) as themselves? Surely what they want is to be cast in a variety of roles, if necessary adapted so that they can physically play them.

I think Michael Sheen needs to go back to drama school, and re-learn what "acting" is.

I also hate the woke support for black actors playing historical characters such as a wife of Henry VIII, and wonder if there would eb the same support for a white actor playing Martin Luther King. It is only acting, after all.

I think that the best production of King Lear I ever saw was Don Warrington (Rising Damp, Death in Paradise) playing Lear. From what I remember, the whole cast was from the African diaspora.

Maybe it's just me, but if the acting is good, I couldn't give a monkey's about the lightness or darkness of their skin!

PS I don't think the example of a Caucasian playing Martin Luther King is a very good one, since the story is all about racism and racial stereotypes. Though having said that, actors and writers are playing around and experimenting with plays all the time. I often wonder about a play highlighting the treatment of Caucasian farmers in Zimbabwe.

Such hypocrisy has been going on a long time. Among the first casualties was The Black and White Minstrel Show!

Funnily enough one of the Black & White Minstrels lives in a village a few miles from us. He raises lots and lots of money for charities by putting on White Minstrel Shows and his performances are always packed out. He's always backed by local choirs and belt out the old favourites with gusto,
