How do you measure your happiness?

#428642

Postby AsleepInYorkshire » July 18th, 2021, 11:28 pm

I've had a few issues with my health which have had a large impact on my life.

I regard good health as something that will provide me with the ability to be consistent and hold work down and provide an income to pay the bills and perhaps a little bit after that.

I suppose it's very naïve to suggest it's possible to measure happiness?

I still hold that when using English, the plural of 'forum' should be 'forums', given the word 'forum' has long been absorbed into the English language :)

Given that “happiness” is entirely subjective, the only reasonable way to measure it is by self-assessment.

I think happiness is a rather slippery concept. If you are happy 100% of the time doesn't it then become the norm? To appreciate your happiness don't you need a little misery now and again to provide contrast?

I am ok pretty much most of the time, and although I don't go round singing and dancing I don't think I want any misery to work how much better it is without it

I define 'happiness' as 'at peace with your direction in life'.

Direction in life is about being yourself and doing what is true for you in way(s) that is/are true for anyone else on the same wavelength as you.

The measure of happiness is how much of what you say is in sync with what you do.

The closer you are to sync the easier it is for everything to fall into place. Conversely, further away will cause unhappiness and ultimately disconnection, ie., you've lost your way and (in extreme cases, the will to live).

In principle, I agree. Contrast provides a tangible confirmation of your mental and physical states.

For example, you are either happy or you're not. When you know you are happy, you don't have to stop and think about it. It is only if you're unsure whether you are happy would you need some sort of check in the form of a contrast.

I think this is an interesting view - but one I'm not sure I could cope with. Perhaps because there has been a huge amount of misery in my life I now need to regain some ground with happiness?

How do you measure a classical education?

A big comprehensive school, followed by a degree and a career in STEM subjects?

I'm not sure that you actually need misery (though most people do experience this sometimes in their lives), just some mudanity to help you appreciate the really special times, like an event with family or friends or a holiday. Trying to be constantly at a high is a recipe to disaster, and it seems to me, to be connected with addition, which is a sort of a state of trying to constantly recreate a state in which you were happy.

NO. That's a modern education. A classical education was the 3 R's, Reading, Righting and Rithmatic. As taught by "Grammar" schools because of the importance of rhetoric (see previous post about political apointments).

How do you measure happiness? Well according to one influential arab all that is needed is, a good book, wine, bread, company and song.

Interesting. That is a different rendering from the one I have. I like Omar Khayyam. And I think he is broadly right with the definition.
