Now that made me sit up and pay attention. Thanks!
My own bass heroes are still Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke, but that's because I'm a seventies jazz nut. If they'd had the gear that modern bassists can buy, we'd have seen something really special. All power to these guys, though. Brilliant!

Re: Bass Guitar....
Yes the electronics help so much these days, helping modern bands like Royal Blood put great stuff together with just drums and bass. I was saddened to hear of the death recently of the great Robbie Shakespeare, his work with Ainsley Dunbar amost defined an era.
I too am a fan of Jaco Pastorius, I saw him playing with Weather Report many years ago. He did a bass solo that was unforgettable.
MM
PS - On Bass by Tina Weymouth on BBC4 recently was excellent I thought.

Re: Bass Guitar....
My bass heroes are JJ Burnel, Peter Hook, Bruce Foxton, and Geddy Lee! Lucky to have seen them all live.
I have recently watched a lot of Tal Wilkenfeld who is a terrific bassist (with Jeff Beck Group) - almost 'jazz' so perhaps makes up for the unashamedly rock/post-punk list

The Beck/Wilkenfeld set at Ronnie Scott's was definitely on the jazz side of the road, and showcased two very talented musicians. Eric Clapton turning up for the encore was the low point of the entire evening.

Re: Bass Guitar....
here's an oddity
Beck/Wilkenfeld/Vinnie Colaiuta* with Billy Gibbons doing a Merle Travis number made famous by Tennessee Ernie Ford
(this is either out of sync or it's a studio version over a live video...but still interesting!)

*Vinnie Colaiuta, the best drummer you haven't heard of ...probably (he was Zappa's drummer , and also played with Joni Mitchell)

Weirdly - it's right people but mash-up video (thought it looked odd)

Re: Bass Guitar....
Playing bass is harder than it looks. I am a guitarist and stood in many years ago for our bass player at our local Top Rank (remember those). It was a nightmare.

Re: Bass Guitar....
My bass hero will always be Paul McCartney.
To play complex bass to such a wide range of music is difficult enough but to sing lead vocal at the same time like he did in his prime is awesome.
