I'd have to include "Get Lucky" in that short list.

Totally! And props for picking up an example of proper (to my ears) use of a vocoder/auto-tune
- still might fall foul of the "old codger's recent release" though: Nile must have been mid 60s
I suppose most of the other ones were engineered/arranged by folk who had been around the block a few times also - except for Mark Ronson who's (just) younger than me... but he probably stole a bunch of stuff from Quincy when he was going out with Rashida Jones)

She's also picked up some of my interest in music gear and how it works - so we've watched the YouTube videos where Tony Visconti goes through how some of it was recorded and mastered

thanks for the Visconti ref I'll give that a go at lunchtime
I hope you haven't seen Ziggy on Prime before (I hadn't, but have seen a few BBC shows about it over the years) it is well worth a watch

Cheers
just listened to Visconti talking about Heroes and Space Oddity
always interesting (I think) to hear the backgrpound to song recordings (and lyrics)

A very interesting set of responses. I was initially surprised to see how strong the vote was for the 70's, but on reflection it may have been because I wasn't specific enough about the question. I meant to ask which of the songs featured in the videos (i.e. the chart-toppers) did you prefer, but I think many posters thought I was asking which decade produced the best music.

If I'd asked myself that question my answer would undoubtedly have been the 70's, if only because of Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, two of the greatest albums ever made.

But having watched both videos it seemed to me there were far more songs from the 80's that have stood the test of time than there were from the 70's - still, chacun à son goût! ;)

How very true
I still lie in darkened room sometimes, close my eyes and listen to Time ( that intro is one of the best ever)

Yes I agree with you if you mean chart music. But that's not what you said.

Well if the music is good it will rise up the charts Shirley?

But ok, link me two or three really good songs that you like from the last 10 years. They don't have to be chart hits. Something catchy and memorable. The sort of songs you might put on repeat.

Thanks for the links to the modern stuff. I didn't dislike any of it but nothing massively grabbed me either. It all seems, erm, safe. Sorry.

Talking of Bowie & Visconti etc. Did anyone else see the retrospective on Mick Ronson on Sky TV a few weeks ago. Now there was a talent

And the best intro ever. Gotta be 'Stay With Me' by the Faces. It was on the Johnnie Walker 70's 1972 special I caught the the other day. Every song from 1972 and not a dud amongst them.

Wish You Were Here is a wonderful album. I'd say the greatest ever. There's a funky instrumental section (the penultimate section) which just gets better and better as it fades out. I find it incredible.

I agree with you about the 80s too. There were so many killer songs that never made it to number one because there was so much competition every single week. I think it went downhill after Live Aid, but I suppose the dance music had its place.

Guilty as charged. I think most of us jumped straight in with a vote. I've watched the clips now and funnily enough, I remember more from the 80's than the 70's. Still prefer the 70's though.
