I read about him in the Times yesterday. Truly remarkable I must say considering that many of his age are sitting in front of the tele all day.

I hope he makes it. I've done 3 and I'm 30 years his junior....

You are right. He still has 8 to go. it would be interesting to know which ones he has left. In my youth I did about 6 or 7 including walking from Loch Morlich to the Cairngorm and Ben Macdhui summits. The innocence and fitness of youth!

Dod, the article Kiloran linked to lists the peaks yet to be climbed:

"The remaining peaks for the intrepid grandfather are three in Knoydart: Ladhar, Mell Buidhe and Luinne Bheinn; four in Glen Dessary: Sgurr na ciche, Garbh chioche mhor, Sgurr nan coireachan and Sgurr Mor; and lastly, the 282nd summit at Cairn Gorm in the Highlands where he will be joined by friends and family for the final climb."

There's hope for us yet!

Should have checked it out. Thanks! I do not know any of them except for Cairngorm and I can understand why he is leaving that one until last. It is not difficult in decent weather just a long slog especially if starting at Loch Morlich. The Knoydart ones sound remote and difficult to access. All in all quite an amazing feat.

Well he's done it -

An 82-year-old man has completed his attempt to climb Scotland's 282 Munros - mountains higher than 3,000ft.

Nick Gardner, from Gairloch in the Scottish Highlands, set himself the challenge after his wife Janet went into full-time care.

He was devastated when she developed Alzheimer's and osteoporosis and wanted a challenge to keep him going.

The grandfather-of-four began in July 2020 and reached his final summit, Cairn Gorm, on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Gardner was joined by family and friends for the 1,245m (4,085ft) climb in the Cairngorms, near Aviemore.

Well done indeed. I guess that is the summit of Cairngorm. Quite crowded!

It was reported on our news at 6.45 or so. Quite an amazing achievement particularly because some of these Munros need quite a walk in never mind the actual climb.

A true story:

Some while back, I was talking to a colleague about the holiday in the Lake District I'd just returned from.

The conversation drifted to Scotland, so I said, on a whim:
"Did you know that the mountains in Scotland that are more than 3,000 feet high are called 'Munros'?"

They replied: "No".

So I said: "Then you won't know that some people make it their life challenge to climb them all?"

The reply: "They need to get out more!"
