Is it a "record" ?

#654660

Postby didds » March 20th, 2024, 8:50 am

I am the holder of a global "first" in a fairly major sport (it has a world cup for example, and is in the Olympics) ... its quite an esoteric and meaningless "first" so please don't get excited :-) - I view it as something humorous to be honest and view it self deprecatingly. But I am the "first". FWTW.

The thing about being "the first" means of course nobody can "beat" that.

So its not really a "record" - for me a "record" would be I can high jump 2.5 metres, but one day somebody can jump 2.51m. Nobody can now though be first in what I have.

What would such a feat be called/named then?

I emphasise this is a very light hearted enquiry :-)

In keeping with the light-hearted nature of the post, I'd suggest narcissism.

Haven't you answered your own question? It's a "First" - like being the first to climb a particular mountain.

Also we need to know what you were first to achieve :)

Could it be something like the first to use starting blocks, or the first Fosbury Flop?

Other Olympic firsts

First to post that cryptic question to Lemonfool?

First to walk/run/cycle/swim some newly-opened road, track, trail, path, or puddle?

Now that we mention it, I may have been first to cycle a stretch of the M25. It wasn't intentional, but the motorway was under construction, and the previously-familiar A21 - where I was heading from London to Sussex - became the M25 for a stretch without any warning!

DOH! LOL - that'll do...

for those that have asked so nicely,....

First Englishman to score a 5 point try at rugby union (in New Zealand, 1992)

I told you it was esoteric and meaningless!

I thought I'd Google it and found it's been discussed here before viewtopic.php?t=6271 :-)

I didn't understand it either. Too esoteric for you and me, and meaningless in a stronger sense than he meant.

But ... think back to your schooldays, whenever they were. All those exams, where just writing your name would score you a whole lot more than that.

I have several 10" diameter circular black disks with a hole in the centre. There is a label with the words 78rpm. Is this a record?

Modern "sports" innit?

I blame the schools, where every participant in Sports Day is a winner.

I remember when (at 12 year old) playing school rugby, I scored a try - and only got 3 points. Can I get it upgraded?
Note the "a" try. I used to dawdle around on the left wing, and rarely did the ball reach that far. One day only 12 of us turned up for the match, and there were fewer players to fumble the ball, so it reached me, and I scored a try. Surely that deserves an upgrade

Erm, were there 10-inch 78s? I had the impression 78s were the old 7" discs.

My first ever gramophone was older than me, and offered four different speeds.

Count me in for that club. I used to spend my school rugger sessions stamping my feet in the permanent frost and rain, and trying to stay as far away as possible from anything dangerous, such as holding the ball. But one day this horrible greasy thing landed at my end of the line-out, and people were yelling at me, and there was no way I could avoid having to try for a go, or was it go for a try? I forget.

Totally flattened three or four players (I was quite broad-shouldered and heavily built), scored my first and only try. And the next week I fell and broke my leg in three places, and that was the end of school sports for me. There's nothing like going out at the peak of your career. :D
