For some reason, and I really can't imagine what it might have been, I'm reminded of Bill Bryson's account of how they named the Teton mountains in Wyoming.

Of course we've got the Paps of Jura closer to home.

I've just returned from a very enjoyable trip to Malta and Gozo, and the memory of cloudless blue skies and temperatures in the mid-20's is already haunting me.

Whilst I was in Gozo I visited a starkly beautiful place called Dwejra, which has some fascinating rock formations. A stroll along the coast was the ideal antidote to the miserable depths of an English November:



I ventured into this impressive gorge while I was there - it was only a couple of hundred yards from where I took the previous photo:



But there's a bit of a mystery attached. Although Dwejra is a fairly well-known place, and by no means off the beaten track, I would virtually guarantee that nobody has ever been to this particular gorge before.

And I would 100% guarantee that nobody has ever photographed it.

So for all you people who like a puzzle, how could this be?

OK I'll have a guess. It's something to do with one of the many quarries around there. Maybe a bit of land that wasn't previously open to the public.

Oh aye, and another thing, Malta will be really, really nice when it finished. Loads and loads of concrete blocks everywhere about 20 years ago, maybe it's finished now. But the best pomegranates we've ever seen and tasted !

All excellent guesses, but the answer is remarkably simple. The `gorge' is about a foot deep, and maybe 18 inches wide!

I noticed it as I was walking across the limestone rocks pictured in the first photo, and thought it looked like a miniature gorge, so I set the camera on my phone to wide angle, held the phone just above the water, then pressed the `shutter'.

So although it has technically been photographed from the air (although it would be invisible on an aerial photo) I'm quite happy to guarantee that nobody else would have thought of taking such a pic in that location.

I've shown it to a few people, and none of them guessed the answer

No, it's even worse! We go to Malta a lot and it's heart-breaking to see the greed of the developers. In The Goodies many years ago, there's a bit where Graham Garden is covering a map with model concrete blocks. "Tim-Brooke Taylor says' Well, at least there's one small bit of green just there." Graham acts shocked and covers it with another block.

Exactly the same! The locals try and put up a fight, but the corruption and the money involved is staggering. Most indigenous Maltese have family/friends in the industry or in the council. Planning rules disregarded and safety as well. We love Mellieha. In the last few years, a building has collapsed, an African worker badly injured and driven out of town and left (unrelated incidents), a huge building put up near the supermarket, exceeding planning permission by 2-3 floors, a patch of green discovered near the Santa Maria estates and sold to developers. The entire northern half of the island is over populated. The public transport is dirt cheap, but usually full of tourists. The Maltese will not abandon their cars.

The one good bit of news is that the planned tunnel between Malta and Gozo seems to have been shelved. Despite that, it's only a matter of time before Gozo is covered in concrete as well.

We are stuck in the house with Covid - we don't know where it came from, but our friends are keeping well clear. So in a brief wander around the garden our spirits were raised by the sight of the first Hellebore (Christmas or Lenten Rose) blooms of the season. Its one of the newer hybrids that points its flowers upwards
