I noted down 457.1 for last year (3 April 2020 since 5 April 2020 was a Sunday) and then 728.2 for today (since 5 April 2020 is a Bank Holiday). However, on refreshing it I see that figure was for 31 March and it's been updated for 1 April now at 736 - I may need to see if there's a 2 April update and amend my figures!!!!

And indeed there was, so when I updated for 2 April 2021 the FTSE All World TR ($) index had gained 96.5% for the period compared to my portfolio's 96.04%.

We need to bear in mind how arbitrary or random a single year's performance figures can be, or even the total return figure on a single day snapshot after a multi-year period. From being just behind the index at the start of the month, the SIPP is now up 113.5% (11.4% CAGR) vs. 104.5% (10.8%) for the index since 5 April 2014. It goes to show how much can change in a few weeks.

Best wishes

Kainos' capital gain exceeded 700% this morning - not bad after a four year holding period (purchased May 2017). This is one of those occasions when you have hindsight knowledge and wished you'd invested, say, 75% of your portfolio in Kainos on that date. :D Sadly I wasn't that clever.

The SIPP accumulation units are up about 20% since the start of the tax year, which is pleasing result so far.

3 December 2021 represented 20 years since the SIPP was first invested. I updated my accumulation units to see how it had gone.

Since 3 December 2001, the SIPP has returned 306.7% (7.7% CAGR) vs. 219.4% (6%) for the FTSE All Share TR; 184.6% (5.4%) for the FTSE 100 TR.

I regard it as a decent result, however it does reflect the first ten years or so when it was largely invested in some plodding UK trusts. The only one remaining is Temple Bar which is a very small proportion of the portfolio. The charges were also relatively high as it was initially a small amount in a child's SIPP, then an increased amount of capital but in a higher charging standard SIPP account. Today, the capital has risen and costs are coming down proportionally.

Since 5 April 2014, which is when I have fuller comparative data (for the indexes):

It has come off the boil with recent market falls, however since 5 April 2021 it's returned 12.3% which is ahead of all benchmarks and compares to 7.4% for the FTSE All World TR ($).

The figures are net of all charges, fees etc.

Best wishes

How are you actually working it out? When you quote a cagr is that by doing an XIRR or your accumulation unit value, or just a 'normal' XIRR on all the cashflows?

My annual review follows the 2021-22 tax year.

TRADES
Small top up of DP Poland from dividends accumulated.

CURRENT HOLDINGS

TOTAL RETURN – INDEX

The portfolio is now behind the FTSE All World TR ($) index but ahead of the FTSE benchmarks. It returned -2.1% over the year whereas every other index rose, ranging from 0.4% for the FTSE 250 to 17.2% for the FTSE 100. The portfolio was up 22% at one point during the year and ahead of all benchmarks, which shows how suddenly fortunes can change!

Yup, I was at ATH's at the end of the year only to drop 14% since to the tax year end. You are not alone, especially among the quality end.

Yes, Evolution very much peaked in spring 2021 and then weakened - strong growth but substantially reduced valuation. Kainos, Spirax Sarco and (it seems) Smithson all de-rated too. Spirax surged to over £172 then fell towards £100 before staging a partial recovery.

I do see multi bag potential in DP Poland, Evolution Gaming and Kainos in the next few years and suspect UK Smaller Companies will be in for a good ride. Temple Bar has also been showing signs of life after a dreadful run.

Best wishes
