A recent thread on the Portfolio Management & Review board brought up the idea of 'Family Firms' as an investment strategy. G A Chester (aka M0byDick) ran a Family Firms Folio back on TMF from 2010 until the boards closed in 2016. PinkDalek suggested it would be of benefit to have a thread to collect together known 'Family Firms' articles and posts from M0byDick as a reference source. Many such posts are still preserved in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, these are the ones I have found.

G A Chester's introductory article was in June 2010

In recent years, a growing body of literature has pointed to long-term outperformance by quoted 'family firms'. The studies use slightly different criteria for what constitutes a family firm, but in a nutshell they focus on businesses in which the founding family has a significant ownership stake and plays an active role in management. Thanks for consolidating this list Bree. Very useful.

I’ve recently been turned on to the concept of investing in family firms after reading some articles by Sir John Lee who advocates this approach.

The challenge I have found is knowing how to identify such companies. If anyone has any information sources or techniques they can recommend I would be very interested.

Thanks,

Juan.

Thanks Bree. A classic list of the family firms that matter. I find I hold several and have in the past held a few others.

There are also the family ITs which are also worth a look.
