The point was that Root, as a spinner, has not that many test wickets fewer than front line bowler Mark Wood.

Root: 38 wickets in 545 overs @44.81 average, Strike rate 86.0


Sure, but Root is a legitimate option as a spinner if the feeling is that the wicket is more appropriate for pace. Under many circumstances it would not be an appropriate option.
