How the hell can a club with attendances like Barcelona get land themselves in debt.

Lousy financial control I expect.

How did Carillion go pop owing £8bn?

I think it's well known within footballing circles - that was Pogba's fault...

If Pogba can tell us where he hid 80,000,000 m3 of concrete I'll gladly go and dig it up

Financial lunacy

And if he brings in more income than that cost is that lunacy?

What about Tom Cruise? Earns about the same and is profitable to his "employer" too. Is that ok, or lunacy?

Or Lewis Hamilton? Or Anthony Joshua? ...

How is he going to do that
you have to sell a LOT of shirts EVERY year
BTW Barcelona has a lot of different sports teams eg basketball, ice hockey, rugby etc
The football teams wages laste year came to 110% of the total income
Please reason that away

AiY - it's taken almost 4 years for me to get over this - I purposely avoid potentially 'dangerous' subjects - then bam I am reading without a care in the world about Messi - back to at least 20 sessions with the therapist.

Well the argument goes like this:

"Barcelona's situation is not caused by Leo's contract. Messi generates more income than he earns. We have done a study and he generates around a third of Barcelona's total income."

Laporta pointed to the way in which Messi has helped Barcelona win on the pitch and this, in turn, has helped make them more marketable off it.

"From 2004 to 2019 we have won 35 trophies and [Real] Madrid 22, and this, in large part, is thanks to Leo Messi," he explained.

"Without him, we wouldn't have won so much. There are nine sportsmen in the world who earn more money in relation to the total income of a club.

"Leo accounts for a total of 8.2 percent of the club's expenditure. All the sponsors demand to have Leo."

- https://www.marca.com/en/football/barce ... b462f.html

Laporta might have political motivations, but as he wasn't Barca president between 2010 and 2020 he arguably has an interest in exaggerating the financial mismanagement which occurred prior to his return. That said it's an argument which is a lot more convincing in recent years than during the Xavi/Iniesta etc. era, a period in which their best European result is a solitary semi when they had the misfortune to run in to the mighty reds and the most famous of European nights at Anfield to bring the thread back to where it started.

You think shirt sales is the only commercial income a player brings to the club?

The value of a player, and the team, is massively different to shirt sales. How many shirts does Lewis Hamilton sell for Mercedes?

I don't have to justify Barcelona's player wages at all. That's one of the reasons they are in trouble. As the thread makes clear Messi isn't being paid the £1m a week you are claiming is lunacy by them is he?
