NIce one Scott
the program starts at 8pm, I don't normally watch the nauseating over long build ups to things like football on Sky
but the hour before the match starts will probably show highlights form the previous rounds so I will tune in at 8pm :D
cheers
Paul
PS Good luck Emma :!: :!:

6-4 6-3 sounds easy - it wasn't. I was amazed how mentally tough she was. Fantastic achievement!

I just hope she isn't too hounded by the media after all this.

Great move by Amazon, 2 hours of advertising Prime Video to (presumably) millions.

I wonder who paid who?

And she did it all without any stupid grunting to throw off the opposition - impressive.

Not sure about the cash, but as you said it was great publicity for Amazon, their logo was all over the place
I watched it on Channel 4 (as I was going to miss the start and needed to record it) wasn't it great not to have any adverts
must say it was a thorughly enoyable match
Well done Emma :)

According to newspaper reports Channel 4 paid 'a 7 figure sum', outbidding the BBC. I guess the Beeb had spent their sports budget already on Mr Lineker et al.

Very well done Emma, and good that Amazon support this.

I must say - I thought those two Mercedes Benz logos on the net were a gross violation of my basic human rights as an English tennis fan....

Had to laugh at the end when Emma was trying to get to her coaches - the scowls from the two escorting security guards towards people basically sitting in their paid-for seats were brilliant...

Well done Emma - there was a point towards the end where I thought Tim Henman's presence at Flushing Meadows might have influenced a terrible 'Clutching defeat from the jaws of victory' situation, but she had the grit to get through and deliver a great win.

Marvellous stuff, and especially so given the awful way she had to exit Wimbledon in the summer...

Cheers,

Itsallaguess

Yes she overcame that jinx
Anyone who serves an ace to win a Grand Slam has nerves of steel
but isn't that an obvious characteristic she has

If her performance at the US Open had been a film I would have turned it off before the end for being too far-fetched.

She was 400/1 to win before the tournament
Would you thought the same about Leicester winning the Premier league which was 5000/1
This is why sport can be exciting

I wonder what the odds on her winning without dropping a set would have been? I notice she's a miserly 10/1 to win the Australian.

But, yes, agree it's these odds-defying moments that stick with us. Headingly 1981 another obvious example. Both that and the Leicester win actually changed the odds you can get on those sort of things happening again in their respective sports. Fool the bookies once....

Seem to recall that Headingly was 500/1
and from the Guardian

"According to the story, "two Australian cricket stars allegedly netted £7,500 between them yesterday by backing England to win the Headingley Test. The two players made their bets when Ladbrokes offered 500-1 odds against an England victory. One put £10 on an Australian defeat and another put on £5."

She still has not beaten any of the top ten ranked female players in the world. She was very fortunate here in that all the top seeds seem to either have surprising losses or else were in the other half of the draw, which surely should not normally happen. So basically the other strong players all eliminated each other and she rode that luck.

Do not want to rain on her parade of course, but also do not want to get carried away. It remains to be seen if she will be the real deal. Or just a one-hit wonder, of which there are plenty of examples.

I take it that the men's final will be on once they've finished showing The Royal Tenenbaums?

I think it's more that the women's game is wide open at the moment. There's no Williams, Graf, Navratilova or other multi-slam winner out there hoovering up the majors. Those other strong players, or top 10, you mention are not really that much better than the next 10, 20 etc. So chances are you will continue to see a lot of different players winning slams. For me it's just great that one of them happens to be British.

It's a fair point that she had a relatively easy run, but she did beat the one that beat the ones - and some of the others beat themselves. So, in terms of who was a winner from all the available tennis players - she was. The record of the top ten is only as good as their last match, and if they do not present themselves - or drop out due to "mental problems" then they aren't tough enough.

However, let's be realistic: she has the potential but it's only now the real test begins. That seems an odd thing to say - usually the test is winning the first major - but Emma has done it back to front. Her hard grind on the circuit and slaving through major tournaments hasn't really started, and that will be the make or break. How people can keep going at that level year after year is beyond me. At present Emma is running on joie de vivre, natural talent and hard work. When that wears a bit thin, we'll see what's in her tank.

As you say, there are plenty who drop by the wayside after a year or two, but I have a feeling and a profound hope that Emma and Laylah will be around for a while to show that tennis champions do not have to grunt, frown and pout, but can project their own exhuberance and increase our enjoyment of the game in the way that people like John Newcombe did.

On a final note, let's trust her steady head and that of her parents keep her grounded and away from the sharks and leeches who would quite happily see her a ruined wreck before she is 30.
