I've just been watching his dismissal of Mike Getting in a 1993 test match, the so-called 'ball of the century', when the commentator said his first ball, I thought he meant Gattings, but he meant Warne's first test career ball! What a cracker!

Thrilling bowler to watch. Raised his game for test matches, especially Ashes matches. IIRC no English player could handle him on a wicket with a trace of spin. He made spin bowling fashionable after years of pace taking the limelight. He was the best spinner I ever saw and a real character as well.

In my world team of the 20th century, he'd be the leggie for sure.

Very sad, as 52 is considered middle aged these days.

It wasn't his first test ball - though I believe it was against England. I recall listening to his first test (against India or perhaps the West Indies IIRC) where his figures were 1 for 150 or so (or 150 for 1, depending on your geography ).

I suspect he was the best bowler of all time. The obvious comparison is Murali, but he seemed to out-bowl him when in the same conditions (e.g. 2004). One might argue that Australia had better batsmen for Murali to bowl against at the time, but I'm not sure that's true (Sangakarra and Jayawardene, amongst others, could bat more than a bit!) and I'm especially not sure that's true in sub-continental conditions. Indeed, Warne often bowled in conditions that weren't particularly suitable - including early in matches when Australia were in trouble (e.g. 2005 Ashes).

Finally, he was a first class fielder (despite dropping Pietersen and hence probably the Ashes in the 5th Test in 2005 ) and a decent lower order batsman (e.g. 4th Test 2005).

Love him or loathe him, 52, as many note, was far too young. RIP.

For some to be sure. Often drinking excessively (a relative term of course) and smoking a lot can be a sign of being careless with other aspects of a healthy life as well, watching diet and weight for instance. Combined, these things can be deadly, but he clearly enjoyed life.

Quite the opposite - according to his manager Warne had just completed a 14-day liquid diet (of the health juice kind not booze) :

"He did go on these ridiculous sort of diets, and he was just finished one, where he basically only ate fluids for 14 days and he’d done this three or four times...he would be having black and green juices"

Marsh was in his mid-70s, so not an unreasonable age to die. I'm sure they would argue that they would always choose quality of life not quantity of life.

i am 83.

lager binges are a life quality ??

ive known people like this myself - they are mostly dead - well before there time.

mid 70's is still not far off Oz/UK life expectancy.

And yes, I imagine that they regarded beers with their mates as a vital part of their quality of life, and would have gladly made the trade for however many minutes of life expectancy they lost in return. It's not for you or me to judge the tradeoffs that other people make in their lives.
