the disappointing bit was the 3rd test really.

the other two were played on such a road that the batting averages looking healthy are meaningless, and to some degree also the bowling averages.

This is definitely one series where the averages are pretty meaningless - its the 3rd test that tells the real story.

...and the real story is that England are in melt down. Test cricket still ranks as the true form of the game and by far the most prestigious and England are now ranking with the minnows.

Where do England go from here with regard to team selection and captain? I have no idea. Inspirational leaders are needed on and off the pitch but who are they? Some will suggest Stokes but doesn't he have enough on his plate? The captaincy was a poison chalice for Botham. I have to go back to Sobers as a great captain/all rounder and men like him come along once a century at best.

Anyone see any patches of blue sky ahead?

I'd suggest Imran Khan stands a decent shout there ? I cant work out how to find his win/loss ration as skipper, but his batting & bowling average was better as skipper I can see

Fair shout! Although not quite there with Sobers IMO. I was more interested in your thoughts about England's short/medium term future.

Im sobbing queitly in a darkened room.

Does that answer your question?

As for a real answer... * blows cheeks out *

Im personally not convinced playing almost 50% of red ball domestic cricket at the seaon's extremities, with almost a full month in the warmest part of the year devoid of red ball, can really help... but Im not one to jump on "bloody 100" bandwagons (though ive personally no interest in it).

For me players need to play CC from start to end of season, to cover "all eventualities", england lions tours need to happen every winter to gain experience of overseas conditions, suitable touring schedules need to encompass more than a joke 2 day warmup against some sort of local side, with maybe an intra squad game added. How that then fits the RL cup, T20 and Hundred is to be decided but maybe they also need spreading out instead of huge dedicated blocks, maybe with 3 way round robins fixtures for T20 eg Kent, Sussex, Essex play each other over 3 fixtures in one day - rather than one game twice a week with days in between. and the etst players being involved in domestic red ball aside form a couple of games at season start

Im sure there are good reasons why this cant happen....

But until we have England players playing red ball often, against each other etc, with the test skipper actually captaining red ball there, Im not really sure there is any magic bullet
