Champions League final: France blames 'massive' ticket fraud as policing row rages

I note a news report that there were high powered meetings in France to investigate this, but what was notable is that there were no representatives of Liverpool or eye-witness fans nor any other official from the UK side.

It looks like a setup for a whitewash

Apparently, there were plenty of French police there, so they asked them to give an impartial view...

Only came across my favourite clip from the last parade a couple of weeks ago.

Mrs. Klopp standing on a bin to cheer her husband as the bus goes past.

Well it looks like we're getting there slowly...

Uefa has apologised to Liverpool and Real Madrid fans caught up in events around the Champions League final and said it must not happen again.

Liverpool fans described heavy-handed policing, organisational chaos and overcrowding at last Saturday's showpiece game.

Real Madrid have asked for answers on the "series of unfortunate events".

"No football fan should be put in that situation, and it must not happen again," said a Uefa statement.

"Uefa wishes to sincerely apologise to all spectators who had to experience or witness frightening and distressing events in the build-up to the Uefa Champions League final at the Stade de France on 28 May 2022 in Paris, on a night which should have been a celebration of European club football."

Champions League final report blames 'catalogue' of failures on authorities - not Liverpool fans -

The report says the chaos has inflicted 'severe damage' on the image of France, which will host the 2023 Rugby World Cup and 2024 Olympics

The first formal report into the crowd-safety scandal to engulf the Champions League final has found a catalogue of “failures” by French authorities – and not Liverpool fans with fake tickets – were to blame for the chaos.

Commissioned by the country’s prime minister, Elisabeth Borne, the 30-page document released on Friday cited problems with crowd management outside the Stade de France, a lack of clear information on entry points and a failure to read warning signs over the presence of “malicious individuals who came in large numbers to commit acts of delinquency” as the main contributing factors that led to “a climate of tension”.

The report said the scenes on May 28, which saw Liverpool and Real Madrid fans kettled and sprayed with tear gas by riot police and assaulted and robbed by local thugs, had inflicted “severe damage” on the image of a country that will host next year’s Rugby World Cup and the following year’s Olympics – both of which will use the Stade de France.

It said that the chaos had “raised questions from outside observers about our country’s ability to deliver and succeed in the major sporting events for which we will soon be responsible”.

The report was published the day after a French Senate hearing into the scandal, at which it was revealed CCTV footage from the night of the final had already been deleted.

Steve Rotheram, the Metro Mayor of Liverpool who testified at the hearing, said the missing footage was another similarity between events at the Stade de France and the cover-up that followed the Hillsborough disaster.

One has to wonder just how damning that now-deleted CCTV footage would have been for the French police authorities, but isn't it a good job that all those fans around the stadium had their own mobile-phone footage with which to condemn them...

September 2023 -

I was at England’s [Rugby] game with Argentina – the organisation was shambolic

Former hooker Brian Moore was caught up in the chaotic scenes outside Stade de Marseille ahead of England's opening match of the Rugby World Cup

Still, with less than a year until the Paris 2024 Olympics, I'm sure they'll manage to sort it all out for next time...

Leçons apprises, eh...

Wherever he is I wish him all the best. I've noticed his absence and missed his input to TLF.
