South of France ideas.

Postby Novoiceleft » January 5th, 2025, 9:08 pm

Hi All...

Next summer I have about a 3 day gap between stays in Toulouse and Marseilles. I'll be travelling by train.

A mid point City break stop could be Montpelier, Nimes or Avignon. The ease or difficulty of train transfers would be a factor.

Does any one have any advice or feedback to help me choose one of the three locations?

Thanks

Suggest leaving Montpellier to one side, and have one day in each of Avignon, Arles and Nimes, the Golden Triangle.

Check rail times, and base yourself in one of the towns and day trip to the others. I've not checked rail times, but if all OK, I'd base myself in Arles.

It's a wonderful area, absolutely wonderful.

Having visited those three towns, Arles would be my pick.

For booking trains in France, I recommend https://www.12train.com/

I haven't (yet) been to Avignon (on my list for this year) or Montpelier (not on my list), but about 10 years ago I spent 3 days in Nimes and loved it!

Tacked onto the end of a cycling holiday, so i was in the mood for a bit of city sightseeing. If it's your bag, there is (was?) an excellent art cinema there - polylingual - which kept me well happy in the evenings.
