How much space...

I was looking at Abandonware sites as I'm on holiday and running out of things to do.

Abandonware is a program that no one is interested in any more, you can download it, play it and it's free.

For those who like adventure games, Leisure Suit Larry (CGA) is on there. I rate this as the second best adventure game ever - First is Secret of Monkey Island (Not free, but £10 well spent)

I turned up the Eliva adventure game which is 2Mb in total, so small it would fit into the cache of my processor.

I then turned on World of Warcraft which needs an update - Erm 15GB of update.

Bit of difference between the two.

B.

And try Leisure Suit Larry it is really good.

Abandonware is generally worth avoiding. If it's abandoned, noone is maintaining it. One consequence is that noone is making essential security fixes, even if a critical bug is reported!
And try Leisure Suit Larry it is really good.

I remember him from my monocrome monitor at work, back in about 1987. Bit of a dodgy character, as I recollect it. And a bit of a dodgy game: he could get a virus by shagging the wrong woman; the player could get a virus by downloading the wrong version of Larry.

I can still remember that tune the PC would beep ...

I'd regard Larry as having nostalgia value, and a place in the museum of old games. But his was also the era of lots of substandard software being given away on the cover disc of any computer mag. Nowadays things have come a long way, including in games.

Many of those old DOS games are 16-bit programs that cannot run on an x64 Windows :(

Fortunately almost any 16-bit DOS program can be run in DOSBox :D

And for those 16-bit Windows games, remember that Windows 3.1 is just another 16-bit program...

"Looking for love in all the wrong places". That brings some great memories flooding back of a very specific time, place and group of friends when I played that when it first came out. Thanks for the link.

Hi Julian,

Leisure suit Larry in the land of the lounge lizards is a graphics port from an even older game called Softporn for the Apple II which came out in 1981 or 39 years ago! I recall reading the review in a magazine and the next month a letter from a foaming raging parent who had been checking his childs bedroom and had found the review while going checking his magazines for no reason I've ever been able to establish.

LL1 as a port, adds graphics, extra text and humour to the bones of a decent and fairly easy adventure game. OK so you die a lot and need so save every few minutes, but the various ways you can die are amusing and lead the plotline forwards.

It appears that the EGA version is on Steam for 0.98p, no connection with Steam, but it's less than a pound. No connection with Steam.

It's a Sierra Game and that means you'll die all the time. Not a problem if you can save the game, but the gameplay structure means that you've got to save all the time as it cannot be completed without reverting to save games.

Sorry,

... And it's the easiest way to make sure you win enough cash at the casino ;)

I'm not sure if/how to persist between sessions but you CAN save in the browser emulator (a luxury I often didn't have with my C64)
- still got run over after marrying Fawn though
