DNS intermittent issues

#473600

Postby AleisterCrowley » January 16th, 2022, 6:23 pm

I've got ADSL with Now TV, and have been getting an intermitent error where I can't connect to any sites
The error message is , using BBC as an example;
This site can’t be reached
http://www.bbc.co.uk’s DNS address could not be found. Diagnosing the problem.
Try running Windows Network Diagnostics.
DNS_PROBE_STARTED

It seems to sort itself out eventually. Oddly my iPhone on the same wifi seems to work OK

Any ideas?

Are both using your router for their DNS server?

On Windows (10): click the Start button, type Network, click on Network Status, then on Properties and scroll down and it should show IPv4 DNS servers.

On the iPhone: no idea, sorry! :)

yes there's 1 IP address under DNS for the wifi, which is the router 192.168.0.1 which is default for a lot of routers I think

Sounds like either your router is dodgy, or it itself is using upstream DNS (your ISP's) that is itself dodgy. Googling "isp-name DNS" or "router-name DNS" might tell you what others have found.

How many devices do you use through that router, and does it happen with all of them?

There are a number of fixes. Reconfiguring the router solves the issue for all devices; otherwise you may have to reconfigure every device. Fixes could be just configuring an alternative upstream, or setting up your own local server such as tinydns/dnscache.

Are you sure it's a DNS problem. You might also see DNS errors if your internet connection fails. Is your phone resorting to downloading over 4g ?

This is using Chrome, right?

When it happens, try opening a command window (press the "Windows" and "R" keys, and then type "cmd" in the popup and click OK), and enter "ping http://www.bbc.co.uk"

If that doesn't give an error but Chrome still does, then try method 12 in this:
https://appuals.com/how-to-fix-server-dns-address-could-not-be-found-error-on-google-chrome/

If ping does give an error then try methods 3, 4, 10 and 14.

Yes, Chrome on a Lenovo running Windows 10 Enterprise
I'll give it a go when (if) the problem comes back (OK today so far!)

I don't own am iPhone, bird it's perfectly possible to be connected to your router by WiFi, and for your router to have dropped its internet connection.

You are quite probably correct, but I don't think we have totally excluded the possibility of a problem with your internet connection.
