revert win11 upgrade

#474973

Postby didds » January 21st, 2022, 10:44 am

an elderly neighbour contacted me last night.

He was running win 10 on his laptop, got some message to upgrade to win 11 and (sigh) clicked to go ahead.

His laptop now runs like a dog and he wants to go back to win 10 as before.

is there some simple "revert thyis rubbish" option, which will leave him where he was with all programs and documents and emails etc, or is it a case of starting from scratch with a reinstall from scratch ?

cheers

Yes, in settings, under updates, there should be a link to revert to the previous version of Windows. It's only there for a short time, perhaps a week from memory. They used to give you longer.

It's possible that the new installation is still settling down, checking for updates, indexing etc, and will be fine if it's just left running for a while to do that.

Does the laptop have a hard drive, i.e. not SSD? Windows 11 (and 10) does some heavy indexing after an upgrade, it can take minutes just to log on. If you leave it turned on overnight the disk should calm down and it should be back to normal. I think everyone at MS assumes that all PCs have SSDs.

He did it several days ago... Id imagine this re-indexing should be done by now

Yes, by default you have 10 days in which you can revert to the previous version of Windows. Tutorial here:

If you want a bit more time to make up your mind, then before the 10 days are up you can extend this time limit. Up to 60 days is possible. Tutorial here:

Some well-known antivirus software packages which work fine on Windows 10 possibly haven't been optimised for Windows 11 and can cause the computer to run poorly.
Try running Windows Defender as the antivirus and see if the gremlins go away.

well it seems the ten day time limit has expired now anyway. So its a rebuild (keeping documents - which I've backed up for him now just in case.)

It does mean any programs (serial keys?) he may have installed he'll have to do again, and also remember any passwords he set eg on email in a browser etc

cheers
