The rapid UK rise in “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks and related VoIP style connectivity for home phones has one irritating drawback over older analogue copper phone services – if your house suffers a power cut then your services will all go down. But there are some simple solutions...

Thanks, I've got an old 12v inverter kicking around in the car somewhere. Never did have to use it in anger, but it was nice to know it was there when we were camping. Should work nicely in conjunction with the two old car batteries that I've got on trickle charge in the garage.

Of course, for a hundred or a little more, you could just buy yourself a small generator and have done with the whole issue. ;) Then you could plug in your favourite electric fire and suffer in comfort. And maybe even keep the freezer running? This one uses 1 litre of petrol per hour at half load (1.4 kw, I think.) https://www.screwfix.com/p/evolution-ev ... _container

Our landline, which is our primary phone in & out, is connected to a multi-station cordless, and a cream phone with a dial and a curly cord of which I am rather fond.
The dial phone is a problem when calling switchboards as few of them recognise a dialled 1 as a selection for instance. Nevertheless I use it when I can.

I hope there will be some means of having the phone converted so I can continue to use it. I dislike discarding perfectly good appliances, that is one way we got the planet in such a mess.

Some information here. Even a circuit diagram, if you want to DIY. :)

DIY arrrgh, I can just about manage the wiring in the car :?

In a newer thread in that forum https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=186480I see a recommendation to this xlink https://www.myxlink.com/ which looks like the sort of gizmo even I could manage, although that presumes no landline which is not my plan, and it's American so not so good for support.

But one way and another it seems there will be options, and now I think of it there are probably discussions somewhere on AV forums as well. https://www.avforums.com/forums/

Don't stress it. Set-top digital TV box. Remember those?

For the foreseeable future: There will be an analogue phone socket either on your router, or on a separate widget. Into which you can plug all manner of legacy telephone devices. Just like a set-top digital TV box. You can buy one right now if you want e.g. https://www.best4systems.co.uk/grandstr ... e-adapters. Though they're a) quite expensive, and b) I can't see one with a UK phone socket. But I expect the price will reduce dramatically when they become more mainstream, so personally I'll wait. It might even properly support your pulse dial phone. Only takes a bit of software.

In time, the intervening box will disappear and the next home phone you buy will connect straight to the router, either via ethernet or wifi. When was the last time you saw a set-top tv box?

And as soon as I set up an eBay search for 'pulse to tone convertor' this popped up https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224769422065.

I expect there will be a flurry of these devices as switch-off nears.

I missed out on the set-top box as we went televisionless in 2012, before the box became a necessity.

The next phone we buy will be a genuine candlestick to replace the bogus version I bought around 2009, which quite looks the part but is actually a tone-generator.

So I've opened windows, can't find/see a ip (whatever that might be) and plugged the phone chord into my router Image But its bl**dy cold with the windows open and the phone still doesn't work.

Sometimes opening and closing the windows a few times can help to get it going. If you're dialing the phone manually using your fingers then you'll need a digital adapter to press the keys. That's the price of progress I'm afraid.

Someone is getting paid for clicks on that link (not tinyurl, but the redirection service it redirects you to). Happily my adblocker declines to follow it beyond the first redirect.

Whatever it is, shouldn't you post the real link rather than a commission-generating service?

Have to say that the anti-banner in my Kaspersky antivirus does a pretty good job with ad suppression (with occasional lapses**), but that I've never had any issues with refer-through redirects.
UncleEbenezer wrote:Whatever it is, shouldn't you post the real link rather than a commission-generating service?

I sort-of get your point, UE, but a direct link would have eliminated the element of surprise. As for commission-generating services, I find it hard to rule against them on principle. They make the Lemon Fool boards financially possible, for a start.

("With occasional lapses*""*) Currently I'm getting two ads on the Fool banners. One is for an electricity-saving device which is (ahem) "widely regarded" as dodgy in the extreme, and probably a complete fantasy. The other features a substantially-built lady from Alibaba who displays an arresting quantity of cleavage. My wife would probably have something to say about her regular appearance on my screen. :|

Oops, apologies to all for wandering so far off the original point of this thread. Which was, ummmm. errrrrr, I'm sure it's back there somewhere?

Well I have taken the plunge thanks to some of the encouragement on here.

I opted for voipfone over sipgate in the end as I felt their charging more suitable for me, they could supply hardware guaranteed to work and pre configured, I thought their charges were clearer and easier to find and their contact seemed better.

I have been very impressed with the contact side (and it's not often I say that these days) live chat cleared up a couple of things pre start and a hiccup post, which turns out to be my mobile provider blocking calls to 05 numbers. I'm getting a number ported tomorrow which will sort that, and voipfone sorted that out too. And best of all I will finally be free of BT, and without me even telling them because voipfone did it by requesting the number!

I will now be paying £5 + vat a month instead of £20+ to an organisation that seems efficient and contactable.

Note I can't get landline internet so don't need a landline, I'm on 4G mobile broadband.

Well, yes, depend on capitalism to provide a simple solution.
Here's a proper dial phone with DTM built in https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155044945739?hash=item2419661f4b:g:oEYAAOSw6I5isGGR that I could use on my landline.

And here's the internals https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304530020280?hash=item46e76757b8:g:LC8AAOSwYMxfgC4J with a nice simple explanation of how it works * If you live in the city telephone line has not support dial-up telephone ,Install this module, you dial the phone (no matter which domestic old phone) you can on the telephone line normal use! But also increased the redial and allocated * # # function.
* DIALOR2.0 can make the old dial telephone to use circuit module; She would not be modern switches to identify the pulse signal can be converted to modern switches recognition of dual tone multiple frequency signal; This allows those who could only do decoration is the collection of telephone also can be used in daily life normal again.

So that's all right then.
