App for photo sharing?

#672868

Postby Novoiceleft » July 5th, 2024, 12:03 pm

Been on a group holiday.

About 10 people want to share their photos. Most of them have hardly any IT skills. Everyone has email address and a mixture of IPhones and Samsung phones.

Anyone know of a Free App I can use to set up a shared photo album?

I generally dont mind paying for apps, but this one will have a short shelf life, so I'm not prepared to pay.

Thanks

For a short-lived thing, you could create a WhatsApp group that everyone can post their photos to. Individuals could then decide to download/keep/delete the images posted to the group on their own device.

10 memory sticks?

10 DVD copies of all photos

Upload all photos to " the cloud" and share the photos

The best option I have found for this is Box.com, which is a little like dropbox but easier to use and it doesn't nag you to 'install an app', you can do everything on the website.

Have everyone email you their photos, or a curated selection if they have loads.
Create a top level folder: '2024 holiday'
The create a sub-folder for each person, so 'Alices photos', 'Bobs photos' etc
Upload all the photos.
'Share' the top level box folder with the email addresses and email them all a link.

You get 10 GB Storage on the free plan.
If you don't want to be stuck managing this in perpetuity, and eventually paying for storage upgrades, then I recommend giving people 30 days to view and download the pics and then delete everything - then you have a nice empty box account ready for the next event.

You can do the same thing with Dropbox or Flickr or Google photos, but I just find Box has the least confusing interface for novice computer users.

WA Groups is the easiest, the only fly in the ointment is it does reduce the file sizes massively so they don't look great when displayed on a larger screen.

I did see something online about WA addressing this to allow higher resolutions, but didn't see a way to do it when I briefly looked in settings. It may be a premium only feature.

It's not an issue for me as I'll just use a shared encrypted folder via Proton Drive with an open/time limited/passworded URL for high res stuff.

I dont think everyone is on WhatsApp or Facebook etc.

I dont think most of them would understand folders and wotnot.

I dont want to create a job for myself as the "middleman" - receiving people's photos to upload.

I imagined being able to create a little community using their 10 email addresses, and sending them a link, so they could just upload their own photos and see everone elses.

Cheers

That's what you'd do with a shared online (cloud) folder as described upthread, the URL in the email will take everyone to the specific folder e.g 'shared holiday photos'.

You'd just need to make sure they had write/editing access rather than 'read only' to upload their own photos to the same folder.

There is always a risk they could upload a nasty like ransomware so make sure whichever route you take has some sort of AV/scanning included at the cloud server end.

If they don't know how to find their own photo folders on their own phones/PC's to upload from then you'll be a bit snookered whichever route you try - there's only so far it can go on the idiot proof front... :)

My daughter set us all up with Family Album https://family-album.com/

She is the only one who can post pictures and videos of the grandchildren (in our case) but both sides of the extended family can view and comment on the content.

Your group will need individual logins.

Another downside of using WhatsApp for this is there's no way to download all photos from a chat, at least on Windows or Android. (Very happy to be proved wrong about this - it's a frequent problem for me.)

You could do a free trial of Photobucket and give everyone the login details perhaps.

It's possibly not exactly what your looking for, but on Android if you go into the Photos app, Library tab, there's an "album" called WhatsApp images, ordered by the most recent. Within that you can select multiple photos and, say, copy them to another folder.

Scott.

Hate people doing this. Such a bad way to do file sharing. The same 200 crap photos get pushed onto all ten peoples' multiple devices, passing through multiple huge server farms on the way which cause a heat wave in Spain that kills two dozen people.

Then someone else's 130 crap photos of exactly the same scene go through the same process.

Then are they all high res photos -- or are they low res so they look crap and then you have to ask people to send the high res version anyway?

If you have a WhatsApp group with dozens or hundreds of members it's even worse.

The OP is right to be looking for a service where the photos can all be uploaded, people who want to can view them, thumbnails initially, then download full size versions of just the ones they like.

box.com looks like the right sort of thing, Facebook, instagram or snapchat also possibilities (but I don't use any of them). The OP is right, it would be a neat service to have but isn't the problem that any facility of that sort inevitably ends up being used for porn or other dodgy file sharing?

Something to bear in mind with photos, especially phone camera generated ones is that they are generally locked down for security reasons, so 'sharing'
them to other apps/cloud services may well require some sort of affirmative action (toggle or tick box) to allow that sharing to take place.
Both at the OS (iOS/Android) and app permissions level.

Historically there were issues with phone camera photos and cloud syncs/backups whereby some accounts got 'hacked' (they actually got phished 99% of the time, not hacked...) and some hot hollywood actresses had nude selfies plastered all over the internet.

So Apple/Google tightened it all up.

That's why things like WhatsApp are so popular and easy to use, there's a minimal amount of hoops to jump through to share photos. So for luddites/technophobes it's install app on phone, allow permissions (including photo access) and away you go...

Interesting views about WhatsApp - I think it confirmed my own misgivings but in a much more eloquent way.

This is still quite a challenge. I did set up a Google Photo Album on my Google Account, and that shares my photos successfully to anyone else by sending a link, which works. Even on a ****** iPhone.!!

However, others can only add their own photos if they are logged in to a Google Account. ANd most people dont have a clue whether they have a Google account or not.

I will try box.com next

I take it all back.

Google Photo Albums does the job. Ive got access to it because I am a Google Workspace owner (a different project).

ANyway, I created a new Album, created a Link URL, and emailed it to everyone. (average age 70)

No logins needed. They are now happily uploading holiday photos from their phones, doing "likes" and comments - like a bunch of 13 year olds. No porn so far :D

Result! Thank you for coming back and updating. Others may want to do the same thing.
