netgear dg834gv3 as wifi access point

curring a long story short.

scenario: router offering wifi is just too far from a point to use the wifi.

solution: cable from router to old netgear dg834gv3 wireless router, which advertises a ssid and provides lcoalsied wifi connection.

eg phone -> netgear via wifi -> web via cable and original router.

Now - I have done this in the past, but annoyingly cannot remember how!
I can gain access to the netgear admin (in return-to-defaults position) via its defaul wifi ssid etc.

But i cant recall now what i would needed to have done to provide

router
cable
netgear using dhcp FROM router for connection
then
netgear own ssid & password and own dhcp

I cant even recall if that was how i did it before!

anybody any ideas.

And yes Ive googled but I getting nowhere with it sadly!

Sounds like you're talking about Bridge Mode maybe? Never done it myself but there's plenty on a google....

In fact - it was far simpler than I could have hoped/remembered.

I literally did nothing more than cable one of the LAN ports on the netgear to a lan port on the router.

And as if by magic now the netgear - via its own SSID and password - was available on the same subnet at the router . Wifi connect to the netgear and all tickety boo for browsing.

blimey!

stand down everybody!

I've done something similar but it was a while ago... I can't see bridged mode as an option in the manual but it should still be possible to do what you want. You only want one DHCP which should be your original router, turn it off on the Netgear. Set the gateway on the Netgear to the IP address of your original router, probably 192.168.1.254 or maybe 192.168.0.254. Give the Netgear a different SSID so you can easily see what you are connected to. Setup is best done on the Netgear with a cable to a PC. You will need to change the default IP address, eg. 192.168.x.253, reboot the Netgear and find it on the new IP address with your browser to check that you have the settings you want. I think that should do it.

I suspect if you'd already done this in the past the router was already configured and just needed a cable to start redoing the same job.
The trick as mentioned elsewhere is ensuring that only one device is handing out addresses (and that would normally be the router at your modem)

For anyone else wondering how to do it - tutorial here for most of the variables... https://www.lifewire.com/connect-router ... ork-818060

If using old out of support routers for switch/ access point or subnet duties just be careful as the security of it is going to be questionable, it's unlikely to have the very latest protocols.

You can often reflash old modem/routers with something currently supported like OpenWRT - list of compatible routers here...https://openwrt.org/toh/start

yup. bang on - as it turned out!

the bigger problem being that i couldnt remember the wifi password id given the router's SSID :-)

I've got an old Plusnet router reflashed with OpenWRT which I use in my garage as an access point. All I do is turn off DHCP on OpenWRT and set its gateway to the "main" router. The two routers are connected via ethernet.
