Chrome OS installed on a PC, not Chromium or Neverware, full Chrome OS with Play Store support.
Seen a few articles and Youtube tutorials for this recently, here's one...https://beebom.com/how-install-chrome-os-on-pc/

There are several new features and tweaks in Chrome OS 86 that are unfortunately not part of the default Chrome OS experience. They are likely not stable enough to be kept enabled for everyone. Some of these experimental features are tucked behind a page where they can be manually switched on or off. You can find these switches, or "flags," for trying experimental features by typing chrome://flags in Chrome’s URL bar and hitting enter. Here is a list of Chrome flags I recommend trying out...

I've used cog before, this is better. Also chrome://sys-internals/# is useful.

It looks to me like my chromebook is holding only 75% of what it originally held at full charge - it's only 15 months old. In use, it does not seem to last as long as it used to :-(

What's your cycle count? How much - % and how many times you charge affects battery life - the type of battery makes a difference too...https://batteryuniversity.com/

My cycle count is 163 - less than half of yours :-(. It's an Acer CP311. With no travel, the battery life isn't as important, but it is still a bit disappointing.

Either it's a cheap/faulty battery or something you are doing charging wise is shortening its life prematurely. Did you read up on the link I posted? There's stuff on there about optimised conditioning, maximum minimum charge cycles etc.

Even if it's soldered in you could probably swap it out without too much hassle when the time arrives, or go to an external power bank.
Soldered RAM or eMMC/SSD is a different proposition - unfortunately many CB's are all soldered motherboards - hence the low price.

.

My charging process is probably a factor - charging to full then running to empty. No warnings at either end to help guide me either. The website recommends not charging to full. This would maybe explain why I have a lower charge cycle count than you, and maybe indicates that lower charge cycles aren't necessarily a good thing.

Interestingly, my Huawei P20 Pro, which I charge overnight, charges until 80%, then stops charging for 3 hours, before resuming, so looks like it is trying to manage battery health itself.

Off-topic but related - my central heating controller started playing up in the past week, requiring a reset nearly every day. I suspect it was the internal rechargeable battery playing up. Unfortunately, the battery was not replaceable, so I had to purchase a new unit. Not too bothered tthough, as it was over 20 years old.

Thanks for the useful info you post - much of it is beyond what I need, as I only use my chromebook for browsing, but interesting nonetheless, and some useful gems - the new screen capture function is handy.

Yep, been there done that! Small top ups are better - staying away from full charges to 100% and letting it almost die. My experience with recent kit has been leaving it plugged in where possible leads to less life cycle issues than deep charging - so presumably some of it is 'smart charging' and managing optimisation to a certain degree.

On my current Pixel 3a and previous Nexus 5 I ran the accu battery pro app from new which recommends charging to 80% (alerts can be set) and gives all sorts of battery health stats. I tried it out on my CB as an Android app but it doesn't work properly (needs x86 optimisation I presume as my CB CPU is an Intel N4000). Luckily these native Chrome OS options have come along.

I have scrounged spares over the years for my boiler from neighbours who have had heating engineers recommend theirs (same model) needs replacing (they don't...). A Lot of stuff that says 'no user serviceable parts' can be done.
I've modded the circuit board on my boiler to bypass a daft basic design flaw which fixed a hot/cold issue. Got a spare circuit board as well.

A friend recently swapped out the watch battery in a Logitech wireless keyboard that had been designed to be thrown away rather than have the battery replaced - it took pliers to get the the thing out.

Despite 'sealed battery ' warnings I swapped the battery out on my Nexus 5 in about five minutes, needed a few specialist tools - bought for the princely sum of £1.50 - from the same place as the replacement battery (which was a tenner).

In the USA they are introducing 'the right to repair' legislation for users to stop all this built in obsolescence nonsense. Hopefully we follow suit...

Still a little off-topic, sorry...but I am disappointed with the lack of options for central heating controllers. Nothing "smart" out there for much under £100.
Meanwhile I have a £3.75 smart plug that does everything I want from my central heating controller - I can set schedules, or turn on or off via Alexa (I use it for garden lights). It shouldn't be that difficult for something similar to be developed for controllers, and having no need for LCD screen or buttons should cancel out any increased manufacturing costs for smart bits.

Open up a separate thread, there's a few on here who have good smart home knowledge from practical experience (rather than armchair). Smart heating control been discussed a bit in the past, including remote via the internet for holiday lets et al.
My flat is fully dumb apart from built in timers - so my solutions are somewhat basic!

As reported by Android Police today, it’s been 2 years since Google retired Google Drive and Photos sync, leaving those who depended on that feature with no set alternatives other than to come up with workarounds and time-wasting solutions. That may soon change though, as a couple of new commits have been discovered in the Chromium Gerrit that allude to some work being done to bring this functionality back; though not exactly in the same way.

About time - removing the Google Drive sync option for Google Photos was a real PITA, and judging by the dearth of usual suspect third party cloud sync solutions (IFTT -Zapier-MS Flow et al) it looks like they deliberately scuppered the API capability...

Chrome OS is preparing a feature called “Phone Hub” that links your Android device to your Chromebook. While we wait for the feature to become stable, you can try it out right now.

The idea behind Chrome OS’ “Phone Hub” is similar to Microsoft’s “Your Phone” app for Windows 10. You can use it to get notifications from your phone on your Chromebook, control the Android device, and continue scrolling through Chrome tabs that were open on your smartphone.

It says Chrome 89 in the blurb but I've got it running on the latest stable channel 88.0.4324.186 via the flag.

Pretty basic at the moment - I'm hoping they roll out the ability to take incoming calls to the phone/messaging apps on my CB via Bluetooth as my headphones can only pair with one client device at a time currently. Invariably someone calls when I'm listening to music via the CB apps/web.

Hmmm, seems quite buggy - getting lots of BT disconnects and dropped wifi tethering connections that I wasn't getting before. Oh well - hopefully they develop it comprehensively as it's something that I would use daily if fully featured and stable.

https://chromeunboxed.com/android-11-up ... hromebooks
Chromebooks have been running apps using the Android 9 (ARC++ or Android Runtime Container) framework for years now, and after skipping Android 10, Google has now listed 117 specific Chromebooks which will receive an upgrade to Android 11. The newest update will allow for apps to run more smoothly and scale properly – two problems that Chrome OS has had since the introduction of apps to the operating system. All of this is possible thanks to Google’s work on ARCVM – their app virtualization container. Oh, and apps will also get the ability to toggle on dark mode so your eyes will thank you for that.

If you’d like to see a full list of all of the devices that were mentioned, you can head over to the Chromium Repository where they were discovered. Additionally, Android Police has cross-referenced the device board names with their corresponding consumer-facing name and has compiled a full list of them in order of manufacturer. If you’re interested in seeing if your device made the cut, take a quick look.
