As many of us are now working and schooling from home, you may have be thinking about dusting off that old laptop in the closet. You know, that one that runs Windows... 7? 8? XP? Who can be bothered, honestly? But it's old, it's slow, and you know it's really not going to be very pleasant to use. On top of that, it'll probably be an absolute Swiss cheese of security holes, and you really don't want to be putting a laptop without proper Windows or Mac OS security updates online. You do have a real option to make that machine feel a lot fresher and safer, though, so long as working inside a browser fits most of your day to day needs. Specifically, Chrome OS.

While Google officially supports only devices that are custom-built to fit Chrome OS, thanks to Neverware's CloudReady fork of Chromium OS, almost any x86 Windows or Mac OS laptop can become a Chromebook, plus: it's totally free. We'll show you how to get set up...

Thanks so much for this info! I had no idea you could do this. I have an old netbook (Samsung NP-N145 10" Intel Atom CPUN450 1.66GHz 32bit 2GB RAM) from 2012 that I was planning to throw away. Just far too slow despite a lot of cleaning and max 2GB RAM. It's not in the list of devices, but may be worth a go. Just one little question. Could I use it to work on and save word-compatible documents (.doc) without an internet connection?

Steve.

If you really need offline with MS office formats it might be better to go down a lightweight Linux route like Lubuntu and Libreoffice. (Have a look at the Linux thread.)

My Chromebook has Android (9) and Linux (Crostini Debian 9) containers as well as Chrome OS, so I can do it all on one machine in parallel, but that might be too much for your netbook, it will probably stretch to ChromeOS only at best.

I have an Acer Aspire One AOD270 netbook, Intel Atom N2600 1.66GHz 2GB RAM. It was supplied with Windows 7 Starter, but now runs 32-bit Windows 10 v1909. It's not the fastest machine around, but runs well enough to make it a useful 'holiday take-away' machine. I have LibreOffice installed.

Yours should have no problem running a Linux/LibreOffice combination, it may even be able to handle W10. BTW your Intel Atom N450 is a 64-bit cpu, not 32-bit.

Is a good real time utility for seeing how much CPU, RAM, swap file, zram et al is in use, if you go to the menu there's graphs available too.

I was using an extension called Cog but it seemed a bit unreliable on its readings (especially RAM which it always seemed to over estimate usage) so I've uninstalled it.

FydeOS is a browser + cloud-driven operating system similar to Google Chrome OS; FydeOS can run smoothly on most mainstream hardware, perfectly supports the latest web application standards, is compatible with Android programs and Linux environments, and can be without obstacles. Used in the network environment of China.

Caveat emptor and all that, but looks interesting as a Cloudready Neverware alternative that does the Android and Linux side of things and has a VM image available too...

Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard Google details plans and a partnership with Parallels to bring Windows 10 support to Chromebooks, at least in the enterprise space. So I was a little surprised to see this tweet from Mace Moneta over the weekend, showing that he’s running Windows 10 inside a VM within the Linux container of his Asus Chromebook Flip C436:

If you have a Chromebook with a fairly meager 16 or 32 GB of storage, running Linux through Project Crostini may not be an option due to limited local storage. Back in 2018, Google realized this and started work on allowing Linux to run from an external drive connected to a Chromebook. After a year of silence, work has recently resumed on this feature; several code updates moving the effort forward have been committed in the last few months.

I can not tell you how long I have been waiting for this day. Well, actually, it’s been right at four months but who’s counting? In late April, Kyle Bradshaw uncovered a new project in the Chromium repository dubbed ‘lacros’. It wasn’t entirely clear at that point what Google was up to but signs pointed to a way that Chromebooks could continue to get updates beyond their scheduled end of life. More specifically, lacros is intended to update the Chrome browser on a Chromebook so that users could continue to browse the web without the concern of out of date security features.

...We began tracking some updates to the extended display setups on Chromebooks some 18 months ago and those changes were all about adding MST (multi-stream transport) to Chromebooks to enable multi-monitor daisy chaining. As it turns out, this addition seemingly has fringe benefits as well and you can currently connect multiple displays to a single USB Type C port via a capable dock and get multiple monitors in addition to your Chromebook’s internal display...Cont

https://chromeunboxed.com/chromebook-cp ... -store-bug
...The culprit appears to be a process specific to Google Play Services but there is no rhyme or reason surrounding which devices are being affected. As a matter of fact, the bug that is causing CPU usage as high as 100% is being reported in various forums by Android phone users as well.

The root of the issue stems from the com.android.vending:download_service from Android. If I am understanding the bug reports, this is the service responsible for pinging the Play Store to look for updates to applications and services...Cont

This has affected my Chromebook, at the moment I'm just suspending the process via task manager, but I might turn off the Play Store until the fix is released if it becomes a persistent issue.

Guys. Following a report I've felt it necessary to remove a few posts that could be construed as circumventing the protection of content for which would normally have to be paid. I am not sure whether this is illegal or not (I am not a lawyer) and I see the argument of the reporter, so I'm erring on the side of caution by doing this. Thanks - Chris
