To round things off... I purchased a LINKSYS - WUSB6300-EJ USB Wireless Adapter - AC 1200 for £28.49. It connects via USB 3.0.
Installed it and turned off the card in the PC.
With the old card just before install I got a download speed of 24 Mbps.
After installing the adapter I got over 150 Mbps.
Before this I was quite ignorant of the difference the wifi card/adapter could have on the throughput.
