Small smartphone wanted
I’m wanting to replace my existing 4-inch smartphone with a similar more modern one, as the existing one is too slow. I’m assuming Android 4.4.4 is part of the reason.
I can’t find a mainstream phone this size - can anyone recommend a modern Android phone about this size, or warn me off any? I’m not really a ‘brand person’ but I’m a bit hesitant to buy something I’ve never heard of. I’m imagining paying about £150 although I may be way out of date.
Modern phones seem to all be so much bigger. Looking at the massive range on Currys there are some tiny clamshell devices up to 4 inches, then some expensive Apple phones at 4 to 5 inches, then loads of bigger ones.
The 4-inch screen on my current phone seems optimal for me. It’s 120mm by 65mm and it usually stays in my pocket all day. I rarely make calls, have a few whatsapps some days, occasionally use GPS for location.
Existing phone is Samsung Galaxy Trend 2 Lite, 5 yrs old.

Thanks, this is useful. It shows that yet again I'm way behind everybody else! In a list of 8 small smartphones, 6 of them are 5" to 5.9" screens. I guess I need to buy trousers with bigger pockets.

Is pocket size the only reason you want a 4 inch phone?
I have two phones, one is 7 inch and one is 6 inch. And I find the 6 inch one annoying after using the 7 inch one. I have to squint more to read the type, and hit the wrong key more often on it as well.
Now maybe you have better eyesight and thinner fingers than me, but a 4 inch screen would drive me mad!

Re: Small smartphone wanted
I had a Sony P900 for years which was a small touchscreen Symbian OS smartphone with a built in stylus.
The stylus made the big difference, operating it with fingers was a lottery.
My second phone currently is a non smart Nokia 105, pocket size on a cheap SIM only deal.
Battery lasts a week between charges...

Styli are about a quid each if you buy them online. Or maybe £3 for five - the surplus might make stocking fillers?
Mine works fine, which is a relief because I have zombie fingers. (Low skin conductivity through my fingertips, which makes everything from using a smartphone to operating a public parking meter an endless adventure. )

You're not alone. I want a smaller phone. In fact, what I really want is a look-and-feel-alike for my beloved Nokia E71 before it drowned. Small screen, but perfectly adequate for everyday needs on a pocket device.

Re: Small smartphone wanted
They were looking at pull out screens and foldable phones.
I suppose it depends on what you use if for. I have a small ish 5.84 screen phone, it fits in the pocket but screen is big enough to use. I also have a 10" tablet for use at home. I can tether this if need be when traveling.
If you view a lot a bigger screen is better. Some watch films etc. You could have two phones, I also have a payg emergency phone with 2 week battery for sailing or biking trips for real emergencies where the smart phone becomes dumb two days away from a charge.
I did have a smaller smart phone, tiny in comparison but almost useless to see or use. Hence the move up to the 5.84.
Tardis phone anyone?

I have two smartphones - Huawei P10 and a Redmi 7A - that have approx 5.3" screens and they are the perfect size. One day, I decided to follow the fashion and treat myself to a larger phone. It was at least 6", probably a lot more, the Redmi 9 I think. It was so unwieldy that I ended up giving it away.
I still have an old Nokia E71 with a UK Vodafone sim inside, so I know what you mean. Perfect shape and size for a phone!
