iphone memory

Looking at the storage, I note that of the 32GB:

Apps - take some 30%
System - some 12%
Photos - 5%
Misc - 5%
Unused - 8%

Then there is about 40% designated as other. What is this?
Can I delete any of this as I am getting close full capacity?

Thanks Stompa - I followed the instructions but this had very little effect.

I had this issue and could not install an IOS update due to lack of memory. Eventually I backed up the phone and did a complete reset. This reduced my photo storage, other storage etc to the very minimum. Not a long term solution as it does creep up over time but it will fix a medium term problem.

I did the same with my Nexus 5 (Android) after I swapped out the battery - fully backed it up and then factory reset- noticeable speed improvement for a year or so then it started to slow down again as the storage and cache filled up with c**p - even though I kept the installed app count to an absolute minimum.
Both iOS and Android are supposed to actively manage this - cynical minds might start wondering if they don't do a very good job for commercial reasons (no doubt they'll blame the app developers for 'poor implementation'...).
