Logging out of iplayer when no access to Smart TV

#405001

Postby Clariman » April 17th, 2021, 9:50 pm

I think I may have left myself logged into iplayer on a TV in another property. How can I deregister that device from my iplayer account remotely?

Thanks
C

Most services have a "sign out of all devices" buried deep in the account settings
- but perhaps the BBC do things differently https://www.bbc.co.uk/usingthebbc/account/what-to-do-if-youve-lost-your-phone-tablet-or-laptop/ ?

So it might be a case of deleting the account and recreating it - or changing the password to invalidate the login credentials in the other tv?

That is the only way, as the BBC doesn’t provide a way to manage logged in devices.

Won't a simple password reset be sufficient?

Possibly, possibly not.

With logging into the iPlayer on a TV you log into a web browser and enter the code showing on the TV, and the BBC then remember that TV is authorised to your account.

Now changing the password might log out everything already authorised, but it might not. It might continue to remember those previously authorised devices and only require the new password when you want to authorise something new.

The BBC doesn’t explicitly say how their system works, so if you want to be absolutely sure then deleting the account is the only failsafe route.

Fairly easy to check how it works though; log in on two devices using your old pw, change it via one of the two, then see if the other device can log in again on old pw. If not, then no further worries.

Thanks everyone. I've decided to take a non-technical route. I'm getting a trusted human being to enter the property and manually log me out.

Possibly I've missed something - apart from potentially losing where you might be in a series, does it actually matter if one is logged in to iPlayer in a couple of places?

I can imagine the BBC being unhappy if the same account were used in 2000 dwellings, but I routinely use my BBC account at I think 3 locations and nothing terrible has happened.

I can imagine it might be a little annoying if a 3rd party was using your account, and their viewing habits kept showing up in your "recently watched" lists. Or if they watched the same show and messed up the bookmark marking what point you'd watched to.

Theoretically they would also be using your response to the "Do you have a TV licence?" question, thus getting illegal access, but that doesn't seem to be policed very much.

Scott.
