Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
Bit of a strange one this...
A section of the keyboard (letters cv, df, er) seen to intermittently lag or not respond at all.
Not aware of any liquid spillage or debris and it's been going on for a couple of days.
Any ideas, likely to be a hardware or software fault?
Anything to try?
It's out of warranty but only a couple of years old.

Re: Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
No idea, but I have replaced lenovo thinkpad keyboards in the past.
It use to be very easy, though it looks a bit horid to do on their X1 carbon.
What's the model?

Re: Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
Try a restart first which will cold boot it reloading drivers etc.
If that doesn't work have a look to see if there are any specific driver updates either via a Lenovo app like Vantage or via W10 updates 'optional updates' / drivers.
Or try updating or reinstalling the current driver via device manager and doing a restart.
Try an in place repair/upgrade to W10. Take a full backup first with something reliable like Macrium Reflect (free edition is fine), just in case it doesn't preserve all your settings and files (it should do).
If none of that works it might be a hardware issue.

Re: Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
A brief web search does seem to suggest that driver issues are not unknown.
Certainly that would be the place to start.
Checking on ebay a replacement part is about £20.
HOWEVER changing it is nowhere near as easy as changing the keyboard on my X230, which is just three screws.
It's a total dissasembly before you can get to the keyboard and will take well over an hour.

Re: Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
IME laptop keyboards are notiously rubbish anyway - whether that is the h/ware itself or the drivers and firmware ... but going back over 20 years now they are shonky as Mr Shonky from Shonkytown, Shonkstate in the nation of Shonkland, on the continetnt of Shonkster.
I've used a usb keyboard in a laptop since then to avoid the issues. I appreciate thats not much help when you are genuinely on the move etc of course. But I wouldnt be surprised if its just "another laptop shonky keyboard" issue rather than it beign tied to a specific make or model or drivers etc.
Did I mention the word "shonky" ?

Re: Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
As Didds suggests - I also use USB keyboards (and mice) with my laptops - and only resort to the inbuilt keyboard when on my travels.
In your case, using a cheap USB keyboard would quickly determine whether your problem is associated with the keys in the inbuilt keyboard or - if the problem remains - it suggests a deeper problem - possibly in the software.

Re: Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
It's kinda weird in that sometimes the keystroke doesn't take and then you press a bit firmer and it works and then you can just type normally for a while.
And then it happens again.
Also the inbuilt camera stopped working.
I'm going to do more tests tomorrow.
Lenovo said no driver updates.

Do you ever move/tilt the laptop in a repetitive/predictable direction?
I had an intermittent error on my Logica wireless keyboard where I could occasionally not use the 0 on the number pad successfully. Eventually tied it down to a loose bit of tiny debris inside it that sometimes settled under the 0 key after I upturned the keyboard to turn it on. I can tilt the keyboard away near to clear it, now I know.

Re: Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
Keyboard issue went away - can only assume something got in there to cause issues, crumbs, moisture of some kind.
Tried all sorts to get the inbuilt camera to turn out and then went into the Lenovo Vantage application and saw it was turned off in there. Clearly that must override everything else. No idea who/how it got turned off in there. Though it's a shared family laptop so who knows.

I've found this lack of joined up settings to be a bit of a recurring theme in Windows 10
- microphones especially need you to enable in several places and "allow" access to them for specific apps
I understand their intentions - but sheesh they could have put it all in one place

Re: Lenovo laptop keyboard issue
Spoke to soon, after a period without issue seems to be happening intermittently again.
I hate problems like this.
