Thanks Pje16 and Breelander.

Alas, none of my Win10 computers have TPM 2.0 compatibility or a suitable processor so I will wait until 2025 and then buy something more appropriate.

Cheers

Hi Karen
I don't think you'll be missing much from what I've seen

"Windows 11 brings a brand-new, more Mac-like interface to the OS"
If I wanted a Mac I would buy one

cheers

For the hardened geeks out there who are determined to run Windows 11 on totally unsuitable hardware, Microsoft themselves have published the workarounds required - with dire warnings and a strong recommendation not to try it. But as long as you acknowledge and understand the risks, they'll let you get away with it -just don't ask them for any support, you're on your own when it ends badly ;)

Microsoft wrote:Microsoft recommends against installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet the Windows 11 minimum system requirements. If you choose to install Windows 11 on a device that does not meet these requirements, and you acknowledge and understand the risks, you can create the following registry key values and bypass the check for TPM 2.0 (at least TPM 1.2 is required) and the CPU family and model....

Why would the hardware be unsuitable?
If the hardware currently runs Windows 10 without issues, what's so radically different with Windows 11?

True
- i'd be interested to know why the CPU cutoff though; as an owner of two PCs just a generation too old (one a blastedsurface book)

Well, regardless of support or not, I have Windows 11 running normally on an ancient Intel Core2Quad.
All files, programs/apps migrated successfully and I've tested the machine for any known bugs that I could find mentioned on the net and it was fine.

As much by luck as judgement, I was able to find and mutilate the files involved in policing the requirements for Windows 11 so I now have a flash drive I can plug into any computer and it installs Windows 11 without any of the requirements being imposed.
Of course, a valid Windows 10 licence is still required.

Well if being cynical you could posit that it's a conspiracy between MS and the hardware OEM's to push sales of new W11 compatible PC's...

Being a bit more realistic - Apple have done well by controlling the hardware/firmware/software environment to offer a tightly integrated ecosystem (not my cup of tea to be locked in but it's worked financially for them) that is consumer friendly.

Running W11 on non critical hardware isn't really an issue - enterprise customers who spend a fortune might want more stability though to be less susceptible to 'update lottery'.

MS also have to be cognisant of the way things are going wrt to Linux and its dominance of the server/cloud space (hence WSL).

I'll be running W11 at some point on a secondary PC without the relevant qualifying specs but the main machine will probably be a new purchase fully W11 compatible desktop (or maybe a NUC).

As mentioned a few posts up, I converted an old Core2 Quad to Windows 11 and its old Office (2007 ?) seems to work.

Indeed! Which, as a recent adopter of WSL, is partly why the constraint on CPU (officially) seems arbitrary
- I'll be giving it a go on a gen8 i7 Lenovo when I'm finished with the project I'm using it for
- I suspect I'll leave the surface book as it is because it's mostly made of glue and well out of warranty (another Apple adoption by MS?!)

I'm hoping they bundle a decent native X server for windows (to go with WSL); xming seems really old hat these days

There's instructions here on how to install Windows 11 on Virtualbox here https://blogs.oracle.com/scoter/post/ho ... virtualbox

The key parts seem to be some registry edits to bypass some checks immediately before the installation.

My old Core2 Quad computer failed on multiple things: TPM, processor and Secure Boot, maybe something else, too.

Even after editing the registry it still refused to install Windows 11, possibly because of secure boot.

I looked in the BIOS but I didn't notice any SB option. A quick search suggested SB came into use around nine years ago with Windows 8. My old computer's design is well over ten years old and it might well have originally been Vista.

Editing the files on the installation flash drive got it past all limitations and allowed Windows 11 to install.

I upgraded my Asus Flipbook laptop and my Dell 7090 Ultra desktop a week ago. No problems at all. It all goes very smoothly and I have not really noticed much difference. It did sort out some problems with my Flipbook's trackpad in the process.

I'm debating whether to upgrade or do a brand new install. I have all of my user data on a separate SSD (D:) and I like to totally re-format my C: drive every 18 months or so and then do a completely fresh install. It is the most robust way to expunge any buried nasties that might have got in there, get me "factory fresh" performance, and it also forces me to streamline the software I install and get rid of any bloat. I keep a log book of the admin actions on my PC (a left-over habit from my time working as a computer operator during university holidays) so a re-install can typically be done by me following my list of self-penned instructions from the last install so doesn't require much brain power and I find the whole process oddly therapeutic.

That is the case for the defence (of my habit). The case for the prosecution is that it does open up the potential for the fresh Windows 11 install to somehow refuse to pick up my valid Windows 10 license and, to complicate matters, I also have the Windows for Workstations additional functionality (purchased from the Microsoft Store) active on my system so there is the additional worry that the WfW add-on package might not activate properly when it encounters my new W11 install.

Decisions, decisions. Has anyone done a fresh install on a re-formated drive and did W11 successfully pull the previous licensing info from the Microsoft database and re-license your machine OK? Also, has anyone done that and then attempted to install Windows for Workstations on top of that fresh Windows 11 Pro installation and did that go OK? (I'm thinking that getting any replies to that second question is a bit of a longshot since I suspect not too many people here are using WfW but I might as well ask.)

I've now done a couple of Windows 10 -> 11.
One was a fresh installation ('keep nothing') and one was an installation over the top of Windows 10 ('keep everything').
Both had no apparent problems with Windows licences, including Office licences.

The fresh installation took less than an hour (didn't time it exactly) but the installation over the top of Windows 10 took about two hours.

I now have two laptops that are fully supported for Windows 11. On one I have clean installed Windows 11, on the other I have migrated the W10 install (with all my files and installed software) from my old unsupported 'main machine' and am awaiting Windows Update to offer it the upgrade (so far it just says "Great news—your PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. Specific timing for when it will be offered can vary as we get it ready for you").

I also have a totally unsupported 10 year old laptop that I upgraded from W10 to W11. This is running fine and got all the 'Patch Tuesday' updates like any supported machine would do. I am just running this as a test though, I do not recommend relying on an unsupported upgrade like this if it were your only machine. I am fully prepared to restore its W10 at the first sign of any problems.

I've upgraded a virtual machine to Windows 11 with no issues at all, on physical hardware t that is too old to be supported.

I'm impressed at someone's stamina to do a clean install every 18 months. I may be wrong, but I don't think I have done a clean install since Windows 7 arrived. It has upgraded painlessly through Windows 8, 8.1 and now 10.
Yes I probably have some junk installed I no longer need, but so long as I have free disk space that causes no issues.
