Facebook's been offline for hours. Along with Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus. Why? Well, it was DNS. Specifically, a BGP issue. When will it be back up? Well, there are a lot of reasons why it's taking so long—not the least of which is their physical data center access is down because it is tied into their LDAP authentication system—which is *also* down!

Hehe, a bootstrap problem. Perhaps the sysops were working from home?

Their sysops should be able to work rapidly round this, if only by using IP addresses directly and bypassing DNS, or running DNS locally (from home) to override the blackholed addresses when accessing services from the techie's own computer. If their sysops don't have their own record of the DNS addresses needed to bootstrap the whole caboodle, that's a huge failure of planning!
