Over the weekend, my windows 10 ( W10) computer had a wobble and needed a full reinstall of W10. I have not re-loaded
McAffee antivirus. The difference in responsiveness is marked....Chrome downloads webpages much quicker and the laptop seems much snappier.
I understand W10 has built in anti-virus...can I drop the McAffee anti-virus? Is W10 antivirus sufficient?

I think so and that's how I run all my win 10 machines
I've only had to deal with McAffee once in the past few years
- my daughters school laptop was re-imaged (back to factory fresh but 3 years old version) when its warranty period ended and it was unusable with McAffee installed
- a fresh install of up to date Win10 brought it back to a useable condition

Re: McAfee / Windows 10
I've used McAfee, Norton, Avast in the past, and they all tended to create problems such as slowness. Years ago, a stand-alone antivirus made sense since Windows had no built-in solution. For the past 10 years or maybe more, I've just used Windows built-in solution and had no problems whatsoever. Windows Security is totally unobtrusive, and is frequently updated. It also has a good reputation (for example, see https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/ho ... 18-211416/ )
I do try to avoid dubious websites, and don't open emails which appear to be suspicious. I also take regular backups just in case

Re: McAfee / Windows 10
I've not used third party AV for years.
There's one W10 desktop I look after for someone who refuses to drop Norton as their AV, and despite having put an SSD in it and drastically cleaning up start up et al- it runs like treacle (CPU bottlenecking). I even showed them the difference with Norton off - still no joy...
