A Linux phone

#449923

Postby fourtwentyfour » October 13th, 2021, 7:32 pm

In the recent past there have been some Linux phones produced, but not sufficiently developed.

Can anyone recommend one now, from personal use?

I need phone, text, text apps, gps, an accurate compass, a map, maybe camera, that's probably all I use. The main reason is to gain control of what is on the phone, to stop auto-updates of stuff I don't use, and to stop any tracking and monitoring of my data.

Thanks.

Android has a Linux kernel of course, but I suspect your best bet is one of the open source android versions like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LineageOS. I used it on an old phone, and it worked with the Android app store. I didn't try wrestling with data privacy though.

I've read/watched quite a few reviews over the years and progress seems really slow, with lots of caveats. If a serious techie who can sort problems or as a second phone maybe but I wouldn't get one currently as a main phone.
