...K-9 Mail Joins The Thunderbird Family
To that end, we’re thrilled to announce that today, K-9 Mail officially joins the Thunderbird family. And cketti has already joined the full-time Thunderbird staff, bringing along his valuable expertise and experience with mobile platforms.
Ultimately, K-9 Mail will transform into Thunderbird on Android.
That means the name itself will change and adopt Thunderbird branding. Before that happens, we need to reach certain development milestones that will bring K-9 Mail into alignment with Thunderbird’s feature set and visual appearance....cont.

Part of the integration is to make k9 look significantly worse?

Re: Thunderbird Android app.
I use Thunderbird on my PC.
On Android, I have tried K9 mail, but I find that Blue Mail is better.
Ideally, I would find something better than Thunderbird for Windows, however it more or less does what I want. In particular, I can view a combined inbox for several e-mail accounts, with e-mails colour coded according to account.

There's just been a major update to v102 of the desktop client - getting some good reviews.

Does it break any extensions?

I downloaded it on Friday and have been using it. The user interface seems a bit 20th Century in appearance ( imho) but it allows me to create folders in my inbox to store/file emails.
(I was previously using Windows Live mail but I couldn't create folders. Before this, I was on Outlook. Live Mail seemed a backward step...not sure why I went down the Live Mail route).
Edit...I should add, I downloaded Tbird under Windows but I think I will try the Android app on my tablet)

So as a first time user you can't answer my question as to whether this version breaks any extensions then...
If you want to liven up the UI try https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/phoenity-icons/. Let me know if it works.

Re: Thunderbird Android app.
I've just downloaded K9 for Android. It is MUCH quicker than Plusnet's "Webmail" and for that reason alone I will continue to use K9. In addition, replying to emails ( very awkward with Webmail) is easy.
